I decided to be daring today and buy $5 of quick-picks on Wild Card 2 to go along with my own picks for tonight. I may exceed my $10 limit. Yes, I know I will because I have to play Hot Lotto, after the dream I had of winning numbers last night. (Posted in blog.) So I will def spend a few bucks on Hot Lotto.

I hardly ever dream of lottery numbers so I must act on it, ye know. I want to win so I can have more free time for this favorite activity

If you're only spending a dollar or two when you play, your loses are so small that you may think you're breaking even but when you spend $10 or more you have the face the fact that if you aren't winning big once in a while then you aren't breaking even.

Doh! You got a point there. The most I have ever spent on a lottery ticket is $20. And I felt real bad about that. (My mother's lectures about gamblers, like my father, losing the mortgage money in card games, stories like that!) $5-$10 is my average. But since I would like to actually win that jackpot I should probably consider your logic....

That's usually how I win or at least break even on my Pick 5 games is to focus on one or two numbers I feel strongest about and work around them. I have a small budget -- would love to be able to purchase 30 or 60 lines

That is not a bad idea though. I am trying an experiment this year where I am buying the same MB and just mixing up the numbers weekly. So far I have not hit it.

It's not hard to test, just write 30-60 combinations on paper doing the same thing before the next drawing and let us know how many hits you would have had if you actually played.

Nevermind, I went away from it for a bit and realized it wasn't so, lol. Isn't the 31/324,632 to simplistic though? I would think my chances would actually be even worse than that now that I think about it.

Wouldn't doing this basically turn the game into a 31 choose 4 game?? With odds closer to 1:30,000?

Not so much. In a 35 Choose 5 game, if you buy 31 tickets, your odds of a jackpot are 31/324,632 = 1 in 10,472

I was just thinking about this and wondered if anybody ever does this. Basically, if you buy 30-60 tickets and pick all the same number on every ticket, only changing one number, wouldn't this greatly increase the odds? For example, here are the odds for a state lotto picking 1 through 35 here:

5 of 5, 1:324,632

4 of 5, 1:2,164

3 of 5, 1:75

2 of 5, 1:8

But if I bought 31 tickets all with #s (for example) 4, 7, 18, 25 and just change the 5th number on each ticket, I am basical... [ More ]
