Good thing you are in Texas. Most states add state income tax on top of the 39.6% federal income tax.

The government will get theirs but the thing is, even with high taxes, the goverment deficit is never reduced because goverment spending is much larger than the amount of tax money brought in.

I could be wrong - and that's always a distinct possibility - but from what I've read, the 25% is what is immediately withheld from the payout. Anything over $400k is taxed at the rate of 39.6% this year, up from 35% last year. So, you'd owe another 14.6% when tax day rolled around again. (not taking into account any other income you have)

I agree. I know a number of people who work there and supposedly it is not a great place to work. You have to remember you have other parties with jurisdiction like the FBI, states, DOJ, local police, even the military in an event type situation and the problem has always been with info sharing and cooperation among these individuals.This just added another layer to the turf wars or the old Al Haig claim of I am in charge here.

I've thought about doing something like this in the past but the only problem I have is in a state where the winners' names are public record. The newspaper headlines might say, (my real name) and his friend so and so won the jackpot. I'd hate to have to expose a friend or family member to the press and make them deal with the media frenzy.

If I won anything more than $20 million, I'd most likely collect the prize myself so only my name ends up in the newspapers and gift the money to my frien... [ More ]

I think that depends on what state you're playing in.

In Missouri, you can split it using a fixed dollar amount, or a percentage ... on the claim form, plain and simple.

I don't understand what is going on in Kansas... They say Only one individual can claim a lottery ticket. Therefore, a group will have to designate one person to claim the prize. I don't see why you would have to split the prize 50-50. If a friend and myself bought a $1 mega millions ticket with money we pooled together, I paid 90 cents and my friend paid 10 cents, does that mean my friend is entitled to 50 percent of the money

If you really wanted to share your prize with your best friend without paying all that extra taxes, you could include them on the claim form, that way they could pay the taxes from their share. The only problem might be they would want a bigger share than you would be willing to assign them.

When a best friend is in trouble, don't annoy him by asking if there is anything you can do. Think up something appropriate and do it.

i would point them to best fee only financial advisor i can find in area

and if not many people knew he won already, aka not big mouths, as mine are not

, tell him to claim it in a trust,and for god sakes keep a low profile

also offer ton of investment info and books he should read on dividend/value investing etc

But we have been friends for over 20 years since high school so I don't think I will miss the money. I'd love it if my best friend wanted to give me some of her lottery win, but only if she was aware that anything above $15k would be taxable at the rate of 55%. (I think those numbers are correct; they changed the gift tax exemptions last year) If you bought someone a car for...say...$30k...you'd have to pay taxes on the other $15k. ...another $8250. If you were married, then your spouse could claim the other half of the gift and you'd owe nothing in gift taxes.

I would be just happy that they win a lottery and I would leave it at that.

NOTE: if your best friend buys you a house or a nice car, you are still responsible for paying property taxes. So, it could actually put a financial burden on you who may not have a lot of money.

If your Best Friend made the offer to buy you either a house or car, that is their choice. You cannot put a price on Friendship. For me, it would signify the high value he/ she puts on our friendship and this is just another way of expressing the gratitude of us being TRUE friends.
