How depressing! My father was 90 when he was hospitalized and we were told he wasn't going to make it through the week. He recovered and went on a cruise with his girlfriend. The next year he visited my sister and her family on Thanksgiving. He died a couple of years later because, by that point, his health was deteriorating quickly.

Last week my neighbor had a birthday party. It was his 98th. He even tried to kiss me on the lips. It ain't over 'til it's over.

That very well could be now that you mention it. My family knew of an elderly guy that spent about $2,000 a month on MM and PB tickets before he died. I'm not sure why, I guess he was REALLY determined to win before he died. The tragic part is that someone could spend $1,000,000 a month for 10 years on these games it would still be highly unlikely they'd ever win lol.

Hmmm..well...when I was 21, I was going to college and working part time...what little bit of money made back then was mostly spent on gas, food, clothes, and going out...We didn't have the lottery around here back then, and even though I still have to budget what I spend , I don't think I'd would've had as much to invest as I do now.

Winning the lottery at 84 might depress me to the point of death. I've worked my whole life, and now at 84, and possibly can't do a lot of the things that I've hoped to do through my life due to health concerns I win the money to allow me to go on an adventure.

I've given a lot of thought to this, ever since one of those lump sum or annuity? posts. I commented that I opt for the lump sum because I might not be around in 30 years to see the last check...or if I am, I might not remember my name to endorse it.

If I won such a huge sum of money, I might just buy or have built a luxury nursing home/long-term care facility. It wouldn't have to be huge, perhaps only a dozen or so units, enough for me and some of my peer group; my best friends from child... [ More ]

Its like l have said before.. Elderly people in their 70-80's play the lottery to win- they do not say l am playing for my children or Grandchildren! Congrats.

l wish her a long life- l would rather have a 80 something winning than an 18 year old pus-head who blows his/her money on cars, mansions, jewelry, clothing, cocaine and in a few years has NOTHING to show for it. l am so pleased she won- this could be the start of an octogenarian run. Now wouldn't that be something?

I vote it's a curse. I'd prefer living paycheck to paycheck worrying about how to pay the bills, every single day. Who knows what I may do if I had millions in the bank. It can be either, depending on the person.

For one thing, let's say someone relatively young won a jackpot and blew it all on hot cars and a lot of 'bling' or something in just a couple of years.

Things that someone thought was the cats' meow when they were younger probably wouldn't even intererest them later in life.

But for the most part I think hitting a jackpot would be a blessing, regardless of the winners' age.

I don't view age as a factor. And one can be far younger and missing more than a few marbles. It is not easy to get a power of attorney or put someone away either (that is only in lifetime movies of the week). It looks like she is already making better decisions than lottery winners far younger than she.

This new winner the 84 year old woman who just claimed 590.5 million dollars....I dont know if she is really blessed or really cursed...Mainly because for that kind of scratch you can kinda get over on a older person by getting a power of attorney document and socking them away in an old folks home...Now I really hope that doesnt happen...but I can just see people just circling waiting for her to pass on..I know people now who have had an elderly parent and/or grandparent sign papers for new car...
