I don't even know why they need to change. For every $2 spent on a PB ticket, the states only put in $1 towards the jackpot. And then if the winner happens to be a local, the state gets state income taxes (save for a small bunch of states).

Not surprising, been saying it'd be like this since they made the initial announcement. Not so different from when Powerball tried the same thing and it failed miserably. They'll probably change it again next year.

Yes it started last month after OCL reached $70M and it was decided to continue it this month before its jackpot was won. I may be making a bigger deal of it than it deserves because it only for MM tickets brought on drawing nights between 7:30 PM and 10:45 PM, in fact I've brought tickets at three different places with six or more different clerks and each time they act surprised to see the free tickets printing.

That's even easier to do in Ohio which is running a MM promotion buy 2 get 1 free. Buying 2 $1 tickets gets you 1 free which makes the cost of a ticket 67 .

That's mostly true, but it's not exactly a promise.

The changes are better overall odds and a chance to win $1 million for a buck though with terrible odds. The best bet is probably using the Megaplier.

I could be wrong, but I doubt it. I think the problem is wasn't change in the Matrix wasn't high enough thus increasing the odds. I think more and more people are playing Mega Millions to try and get the second tier one million dollar prize more so then the jackpot itself. I am somewhat surprised how as of late the MM jackpot can't even get above $20 million before someone hits it. Everything runs in cycles though, the jackpot drought is soon to come and the jackpot will increase accordingly.... [ More ]

Well jj, before the matrix change MM paid out 8 to 12 jackpots a year.

In another week this year will be half over and so far there's been 5 jackpots so it's on a pace to pay 10 for 2014.

Considering two drawings a week that's not a whole lot of 'fleecing'.

I too thought that we'd see winning jackpots in the $500 million range more often. And that we'd see a jackpot on or around the billion dollar mark about once a year. So far, I'm not seeing any significant difference between the jackpots won before the matrix changes and those won after. And no new records have been set. Powerball still holds the record for the largest single jackpot payout using a matrix with better odds than MM. Who would have thought it

I don't recall anyone promising higher jackpots more often ; do you have a quote from a MUSL or a state lottery official?

Because the odds against were increased from 175 million to 1 to 258 million to 1, the obvious should be jackpots will be hit less often than before. Jackpots should be higher because of the higher odds, but just like before when the jackpot approaches $500 million, a jackpot frenzy begins making it almost must win

I find that I am hitting mega million more often than i ever was only because i am hitting the megaplier....not as many number in megaplier as there was before the change.

It looks like you mean you're hitting the bonus number more often after they decreased from 46 to 15. The Megaplier is a $1 side bet where any winnings are multiplied 2 to 5 times.

Myself i like the mega million is running and i always play the megaplier with it. I find that I am hitting mega million more often than i ever was only because i am hitting the megaplier....not as many number in megaplier as there was before the change. Now i have not hit any great amounts but have hit several times up to 50 bucks or so...

Another reason i like the megaplier is you can still win what is it if you hit all the white balls....2 to 5 million dollars. I like that too.

We did once. It was around Christmas. Remember all the talk that it was going to hit a billion dollars. Then, two people, one in San Jose and the other in Atlanta shard the jackpot. It was $648 million, probably 2-3 draws from a $1 billion.

Me too. I could care less if I skip a draw now. My budget is even lower, mainly because we don't have the megaplier. I play $1 twice a week.

Being a lottery enthusiast, I hate the low jackpots and odds just as much as the next player. But the lotteries do not have players' interests at heart.

We can't even get to our first billion!

As I've said and keep saying, this is exactly what they don't want. Every lottery director I have heard from (at last count, 5) dreads reaching this level. They're actually already thinking of ideas to prevent it from ever reaching/surpassing that point.

The Mega Millions commission didn't go high enough on the odds. It takes well over 20 draws to get the jackpot in the 1 - 2 billion range. Considering 104 draws a year you need a winner every 26 draws(3 months).
