Color and/or complexion does not define a race. Caucasian, Mongolian, and Negroid are universally accepted as the three race of humans though in 1911 American Indians and Australian Aborigines were classified as separated races. Today humans are generally divided into ethnic groups which could number in the thousands.

Lottery is pure luck. Gender, age, race, location of ticket purchase don't matter. Older people tend to play more than young people and more than 60% of the country population is white so

I scanned this from a book I have called Lottery Winners' Guide: When it Happens to You. It tells the percentage of lottery players based on race. Since more white people play the lottery it's obvious that they will have more winners.

But I agree with everyone else. The terminal that picks the numbers and the balls that are drawn don't care what color someone is. All that matters is that you pick the right numbers.

I'd be a little concerned with people being asked their race when they win some lottery money. This is not a college admission process and I don't see any value added by doing this for a lottery.

Now that I think about it I remember reading in the last TLC commission meeting minutes that they did conduct a poll of sorts breaking down age, ethnic, and games. I didn't spend much time reading that part of the minutes as it just didn't mean anything to me. And Stack 47 it would be great if the lotteries did something like this to break down the stats of who wins by states and race. It would probably dispel or prove a lot of myths and finger pointing. Like i said earlier when i talked to this woman, and she said lots of black folks win some prizes they just don't get the attention because the amount of money is too small.

All l am going to say is this:

Just as the winning lottery ticket could be either a self pick or a Quick Pick- the vending machine or convenience store clerk does not look at the person handing over their play slip and press a button that says If player is White- press *1-.... If Black, Asian, Hispanic or other- press *2.. BEFORE sending the play slip through the machine.

That's my final answer and l am standing by it....

Well Ebony magazine at the time did not give any statiscal Numbers so it's a fallacy on their part for not doing this. i don't think blacks play mm, pb, or any of the big jackpot games than they play pick 3 or 4, or any pick 5 games. It is hard to keep stats on winners by state and by race. Because the lotteries don't have the time break that down. But i would love to see the results of that if it ever happened. I can't argue with the point you made because it is valid.

At best we can say lottery players are 18 and over or whatever the minimum age is, buying tickets anonymously, and the majority of wins are prizes under $600 with no record of who wins what. Someone could keep statistics on MM, PB, or state lotto games jackpot winners, but because only a tiny percentage of players win jackpots, those statistics are basically useless.

Yes, but again, what is a large number of people? The concept of percentages existed 30 years ago so that should have been included. Good journalism would have approached this question with facts, not unsubstantiated innuendos. If statistics had backed up their claim, then the next step would be to question how the machines could possibly determine the race of the ticket purchaser.

I started playing the lotto in 1996 when I turned 21 and I have not been too lucky in it either. The most I won was $350 on scratch-its not off of powerball, megabucks or mega millions. My biggest gambling winnings came from two casinos that are local spirit mountain casino and chinook winds casino which are tribal casinos. Teddi, it is interesting that you bring up the percentages. This article happened almost 30 years ago back in the early 90's. So they never gave the percentages. I presume a large enough number of folks back then made the issue worthy of a written article in the magazine. Because there really weren't any big jackpot winners who who were black.

I don't mean to be rude, but that makes no sense. What does a lot constitute? What are the actual number of people in each race playing and how many tickets are each race buying. A lot means nothing without context.

Now, if one race was buying say 20% of the tickets but winning 70% of the time, then that would be something to question. But that's not going to happen, because that would be a statistical anomaly.

But years ago when the big jackpot games were just starting out and a lot of black folks were playing them, a lot of them became frustrated after a few years of no black winners. So hence the ebony article back then. But today it's an improvement nobody dares bring it up. As you can see on LP itself Like you said its all about luck these days. Just dumb luck you in the right place at the right time.

Well the way i see it PG county is abt 80 percent black and 20 -30 percent white. Where i live in my area its mixed. some middle income, some high.In recent years i seen a lot of spanish move into the area. I would have to say more of the northern counties in maryland win more than the southern counties. The northern counties are near baltimore and the southern counties are the dc metro area. I'm sorry but the lottery machine doesn't know if you're black, white, Asian or from another planet. It all depends on who's playing when and who was lucky enough to have the right numbers at the time the machine spit out the numbers. I just don't see how race has anything to do with winning the lottery. If any of one race is playing more than another at any given time then they will probably win more,period.
