They're called money pits for a reason.

Remember in faulty towers, the old guy the major? that'll be me. checking my stocks daily in the paper, over a scotch. when I get bored of the scenery its off to another hotel in some other holiday resort town. I have watched a few mansion restorations shows on TV ; cant say it looks attractive to me. A world cruise could pay for itself; with income earned through investments and lack of money pits to blow money on, while trapped on a boat.

I really like the mansions that have the two story foyer with curved floating staircase on each side to the second floor balcony you can look down from on the huge Christmas tree placed below.

I would move to a small community in the Northwest - maybe Vancouver Island.

If I was a big jackpot winner having a lot of publicity, I might have to seek seclusion.

I doubt I would have to deal with beggars.

The fact that a 'rich guy' has moved into the area would prompt some initial discussions but most people would

just keep doing what they need to do to survive.

Yes, it rains a lot, but dealing with changing weather patterns would be appreciated by someone who has lived

LOL.

Well, it IS secluded. But... it's basically scrub brush, rocks, and not much else. They show pictures of wildlife like deer. Frankly, it's so far out in the middle of nowhere nobody in their right mind would be there, including guests, invited or uninvited.

I guess that's why it's attractive to me. No people.

I agree with you, location does indeed take precedent. I would never want a gorgeous home if it was located in or next to crime ridden neighborhood no matter the price.

Wow that mansion ...... that could be beautiful again with a lottery win lol. You can tell it was really something in its time, sad shape it is in now. Kind of eery, the family walked out and never looked back, time standing still.

I agree making a choice of one in particular would be a problem. I love the queen anne victorians. Sometimes I feel I was born in the wrong century lol.

I know, it's so hard to choose between black mold and Chinese drywall. With new there is little chance of hidden doors and secret places to discover. Having ten pounds in a seven pound place I'm lured by more rooms then I could ever fill at the current rate. Not a horder, can you really have too many books and cats, more like a herder with a ton of lottery stuff.

With a jackpot win, you could easily have your dream home built from scratch while letting the landscape mature before you even decide to move in. In terms of construction bugs, a house manager could address any and all issues while breaking in the home.

I voted brand new, as that's closest to what I want. But really, I don't want to be the first owner. 5 to 15 years old would be fine. Let someone else work out any new construction bugs and have the landscaping mature and grow in somewhat.

I agree, not worth your time or life renovating ANY kind of property in a crime, ridden city where vandalism and theft is second nature for many of the residents. I have seen some of these neighborhoods and no way in hell would I even purchase property there.

Like others have mentioned, location takes precedent over any kind of home. I would much rather have the worse house in a highly desirable neighborhood than a dream home in a neighborhood in which I may get shot just walking out my home... [ More ]

IMHO, location is the only sensible reason to buy a piece of crap building when you can afford to buy a perfectly good building unless you're dream retirement is renovating or restoring old buildings. Believe it, I've read about people in Detroit buying houses for a grand (must be a current Detroit resident) putting a ton of money in and when all fixed up, have a house worth $1,000.

I'm scouting out places that can keep the zombies out when their time comes and would be worthless to the rouge humans like an electrical substation building. A commenter on another forum posted that her brother bought a Detroit fixer upper. When he found a number of hook ups to his electricity, he disconnected them. Someone then came over and shot him. I think he was shot in the leg but it hit a major artery and he suffered a stroke in the ambulance. He is now paralysed on one side of his body, very depressed, cant return to the house he bought and cant sell it.

HA! I just saw this video a couple days ago after watching a documentary of Detroits 1$ houses.

Many many incredible mansions around the world, check out the ones in Belgium for example. Or check some gilded age houses in the US - beautiful.

Yesterday I was lottery-daydreaming about renovating a castle (one like Etz Castle) but thought it would be simply to expensive and impractical.

The video link below is about exploring an abandon millionaire's mansion. People living there just upped and left it to rot away in the woods.
