When we're dreaming about winning the lottery, why not dream about some of the weird things we could afford to buy.

The video link below is about exploring an abandon millionaire's mansion. People living there just upped and left it to rot away in the woods. Can't help thinking what it would be like to buy something like this for a really cheap price and fixing it up again. It has lots of potential in you're into DIY with tons of free time and money. Of course you could rent a nice three bedroom for what it most cost to heat such a place. Don't want to live the plot of The Money Pit movie.

When you have the money, there's all these abandon hulks out there, cruise ships, bunkers, hotels for sale.

Maybe I watch too many videos these days. BobP

HA! I just saw this video a couple days ago after watching a documentary of Detroits 1$ houses.

Many many incredible mansions around the world, check out the ones in Belgium for example. Or check some gilded age houses in the US - beautiful.

Yesterday I was lottery-daydreaming about renovating a castle (one like Etz Castle) but thought it would be simply to expensive and impractical.

A mansion that's built to high standards I could see, depending on the size and state of (dis)repair it's in. Given a jackpot of 200M$ after taxes, definitely an option.

Texas first capital building is auctioned of in December, looks beautiful.

I think the problem with these behemoths is that they tie you down and it's nearly impossible to unload them again.

one can find many interesting places in which to live that don't even come with the Multimillion dollar price tag

I still say if one had the patients and nerve find an old campground and just convert that to private property

or better yet find a quirky conversion that suited thy needs

A commenter on another forum posted that her brother bought a Detroit fixer upper. When he found a number of hook ups to his electricity, he disconnected them. Someone then came over and shot him. I think he was shot in the leg but it hit a major artery and he suffered a stroke in the ambulance. He is now paralysed on one side of his body, very depressed, cant return to the house he bought and cant sell it.

If I won a jackpot, I would buy a house that needed no work. I have better things to do with my time.

I've restored old houses before, could be a nice tax write-off. There are websites that specialise in them, also the last page in This Old House magazine has one featured every month.

Believe it, I've read about people in Detroit buying houses for a grand (must be a current Detroit resident) putting a ton of money in and when all fixed up, have a house worth $1,000.

I'm scouting out places that can keep the zombies out when their time comes and would be worthless to the rouge humans like an electrical substation building. Have to wait until after the zombies make real estate worthess unless I win before they do. Some overpass flyovers here have hatches that would keep zombies out, but no kitchen or bathroom, sweat boxes. <sigh>

The most incredible home in an undesirable neighborhood doesn't make much sense to me. If I had the funds, location would dictate where I would live and I would not oppose doing a tear down if the property had incredible views.

Never attempt to maintain a lifestyle you can't afford.

Who, oh who would win a jackpot and buy a house in Detroit?

Even back when the Soviet Union still existed they made many propaganda films about the US, using Detrot and parts of D.C. as the street scenes and the accompanying music was always Once I Had A Railroad.

Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any. So many systems, so many theories, so few jackpot winners.

There is one and only one 'proven' system, and that is to book the action. No matter the game, let the players pick their own losers.

What a truly horrible story, I feel so bad for that man. Good intentions and bad results.

IMHO, location is the only sensible reason to buy a piece of crap building when you can afford to buy a perfectly good building unless you're dream retirement is renovating or restoring old buildings. People have been buying perfectly good (and already lavish) houses in Beverly Hills and tearing them down because they wanted that piece of property for their new house for at least the last 20 to 30 years. That's now becoming somewhat common in a lot of other places where the best pieces of property already have houses on them.
