My husband s job used to take us to Las Vegas several times a year so we would often head out to Arizona to pick up tickets. Always funny to see how many Nevada license plates were filling the parking spaces when the jackpot was high.

No, I don t think it has anything to do with how much they have to sell. I don t think the clerks really care about that. I do think it has to do with a couple factors. 1) it is more work for the clerks to run the lottery machine than it is the cash registers. 2) The Lottery takes more time and they can get a line of impatient people. 3) I used to routinely fill out a bet slip and make a purchase for 15 draws in advance so it wasn t unusual for me to spend over a $100. I had more than one clerk

Maybe the clerks don t like selling them but convenience store owners LOVE the lottery. I just read recently that 95% of people who go into a store to buy a lottery ticket also buy something else and, on average, spend over $10. In my state the association that represents gas stations and convenience stores lobbied hard against the state allowing online ticket sales because that would stop people from coming into the stores to purchase tickets. They were successful in stopping online sales.

It's only a nickel on the dollar and lots store clerks will say some of the players are very annoying. I had to stop playing Keno at a couple of stores because I didn't want to get shut out and watch the numbers being drawn. Possibly one of the reasons the lottery decided to sell Keno tickets online.

Just to pay minimum wage, stores must sell $155 worth of tickets an hour so it not exactly a money making proposition.

I won $500 on Cash4Life at a local gas station. They have the same setup and you can tell they don't like selling lottery tickets or scratch off tickets. If you think they get an attitude about selling, you can imagine their attitude about cashing one in. When I checked and saw that you can cash anything under $600 in a store I took it back there. I even told them it was a big winner, did they have enough money. They never asked me how much, just grunted and checked the ticket.

The employee t... [ More ]
