From what I understand, here in Florida we do not have to hold a press conference. However, our name, city of residence, winnings, etc. are public record.

I've read that it's advised to give the press conference to get it out of the way. Otherwise you could end up with reporters stalking and annoying you, wanting that exclusive interview for themselves.

That just sounds like the lottery people trying to justify their preference for winners giving a press conference for advertising purposes... [ More ]

Here in California there have been a few who claimed their prize without the required publicity.

Marvin Mae Costa who won 1/3 of the largest prize so far, the Power Ball worth $1.6 billion. All we know about them are their names.

There was the couple who did not do the press interview. He wanted take out Hawaii style food and she wanted KFC. They decided on the Hawaii food and he bought a lucky winning ticket.

The wife was a NBC employee in Los Angeles. They are noted in YouTube.

I am familiar with all three of your examples.

Abraham Shakespeare won the lottery in November of '06 and wasn't reported missing until Nov. '09. Besides not fulfilling the soon part of your statement, a press conference had nothing to do with his death. Even if Florida had allowed anonymity, Shakespeare was sued for his winnings by a co-worker, so his identity was made public anyway.

Abraham Shakespeare was murdered for his winnings. He realized that he was down to his last million after winning 17 million before taxes and after helping a lot of people out. If forced by law, I'd give one. But my answers would make them regret they did so. I'd start by thanking all the schmucks that played the lottery and funded my jackpot prize. Then I'd say that the secret to winning is to drain your retirement account and take cash advances on your credit cards to buy as many tickets as possible. Finally, I'd tell them that I am going to donate some of the winnings to have homeless and drug addiction centers built next to each lottery district office in the state... [ More ]

I never did like the fact that many States force Lottery Winners to come forward with the wins before they can claim their winnings. At least three winners were soon murdered for Lottery money soon after winning. You'd think these Lottery Murders would make States stop forcing Lottery Winners to go public, but no. :/ At least get a Lottery Representative to pose as the actual Winner while the Actual Winner gets paid in private. grwurston, I do have some problems that might cause the lottery officials to refuse me. Otherwise I prepare for it by viewing past winners. Like Julie Leach in Michigan, the past two winners in NJ, Jim Carolyn McCullar in Washington State, and more.

This helps me stay interested in the games.
