At least three winners were soon murdered for Lottery money soon after winning.
Who were they?
I'm guessing Abraham Shakespeare for one, not sure of the others...........
I don't think attention mongers would fare too well after a press conference.......
Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any. So many systems, so many theories, so few jackpot winners.
There is one and only one 'proven' system, and that is to book the action. No matter the game, let the players pick their own losers.

If forced by law, I'd give one. But my answers would make them regret they did so. I'd start by thanking all the schmucks that played the lottery and funded my jackpot prize. Then I'd say that the secret to winning is to drain your retirement account and take cash advances on your credit cards to buy as many tickets as possible. Finally, I'd tell them that I am going to donate some of the winnings to have homeless and drug addiction centers built next to each lottery district office in the state.

Abraham Shakespeare was murdered for his winnings. He realized that he was down to his last million after winning 17 million before taxes and after helping a lot of people out. Some nasty woman named Dorinda or Dorice Moire, better known as Dee Dee Moore he didn't even know before winning approached him and claimed she wanted to write a book on his life. He should have known right then and there that she was up to something shady. Why would anyone want to read a book on Abraham's life? All he did was win The Lottery, like many other people had before him.
She pretended to be his friend in a very incriminating video and suggested he take a vacation to another Country to avoid the harassment of people begging him for money. He himself mentioned feeling harassed for money. She then convinced him to put his last million in her Company so that she could hold on to it for him. He actually believed her and put the money in her Company! No! No! Instead of holding the million for him like she claimed she would do, she spent his million on fancy stuff for her and her boyfriend. That's embezzlement. Abraham finally got a light go off on his head and he came to full terms that he gave his million to a complete stranger. He went to Dee Dee's house and asked for his million back. Knowing she stole his money and could be sued/jailed for embezzlement, she shot him instead and then dumped his body on either her boyfriend's property or her property. She had Abe's friend, Greg call his Mom as Abe and send a letter to her as Abe too. Dee Dee paid $300 to Greg to do this. Abe's family was suspicious as Abe was illiterate so there is no way he could have written that letter, and Abe's Mom thought that Abe sounded really off as if he were someone else. She turned Greg's number to the police who called Greg back and Greg could have been arrested for impersonating Abe, but they gave him a way to not be arrested. Turn on Dee Dee and trap her into incriminating herself. Greg tricked Dee Dee into revealing that she knew where Abraham's body was. Greg put a mini tape recorder in a red bull can and got her to confess that way, unaware that Greg had turned on her! Greg was genius! The police dug up the area Dee Dee had confessed to Greg that Abraham was, and sure enough, they found Abraham's dead body. Dee Dee was arrested and in the interrogation room she began saying a bunch of wild stories, one of the most outrageous was that a drug dealer named Ronnie murdered him. WTF? Crazy. She also claimed that her 14 year old son shot him to protect her because Abe was strangling her. She also claimed that she shot Abe herself in self defense when he pulled out a gun on her(She finally confessed to killing Abe herself when the police didn't buy her first wild stories. What an awesome Mom. Threw her own SON under the bus for a murder she committed. At her trial, she was Found Guilty and sentenced to Life Without Parole and soon seriously tried to sell her story to Lifetime or something like that to make bail money! WTF! She is whacked!
The other two people who got murdered for Lottery winnings is a guy who had started a business with his brother and sister in law and they murdered him to get even more money than the business was/would be bringing in. And before his brother and his brother's wife murdered him, another brother had hired a hitman to kill him to for his Lottery winnings but he miraculously survived the attempted murder, only then to be murdered by his brother and sister in law.
Another person won The Lottery, but before he could even cash in his winnings, he was suddenly and mysteriously murdered by Cyanide! The case is still a cold case to this very day!
"What's your ADDRESS?" May be the CREEPIEST question EVER asked to a Lottery Winner! O.O WTF?
At first, I found the one digit away draws kind of amusing, but now I am PISSED! 15 or 16 times I was off by just one digit in recent times!🤬 No longer find this amusing, it's making me REALLY angry now!🤬

I am familiar with all three of your examples.
Abraham Shakespeare won the lottery in November of '06 and wasn't reported missing until Nov. '09. Besides not fulfilling the "soon" part of your statement, a press conference had nothing to do with his death. Even if Florida had allowed anonymity, Shakespeare was sued for his winnings by a co-worker, so his identity was made public anyway.
(In a related story, Shakespeare's former girlfriend, Antoinette Andrews, won a million bucks in 2013.)
Jeffrey Dampier Jr. was the man who won $20 million in the Illinois lottery in 1996 and was killed in 2005 by a sister-in-law and her boyfriend. That doesn't fit the definition of "soon after" nor did a press conference have a thing to do with his murder.
Urooj Khan was the lottery winner that died of cyanide poisoning the day after claiming (not collecting) his winnings. It was ruled a homicide, but no one has yet been charged. While I do not know the entire story, it seems to me that the only one(s) who would have a motive would be someone who stood to inherit the money. Again, doing a press conference seemed to have nothing to do with that murder.
A better case for anonymity and no publicity would be that of Craigory Burch Jr., a young man killed by home intruders. That said, he had made some very public donations after claiming his winnings and since he lived in a very small town in Georgia and some of his killers lived in the same town and the rest lived in another small town just a few miles away, I don't know if the announcement of his win had anything OR everything to do with his murder. Plus, his murder was several months after his win, not "soon after".
I do not have the information I once gathered up on all the lottery winners killed - at least not at my fingertips (it's on one of my external hard drives, one I have turned off and not accessible until I hook it back up) but what I deduced from my research is that lottery winners are their own worst enemies, either abusing drugs and/or alcohol ( David Lee Edwards - and several British winners ) or not being able to say "No" to beggars and "friends".(and having a family that did not see any signs of distress or depression such as Billy Bob Harrell - who later took his own life.) Several others did not get killed or OD after winning, but lost it all or nearly so by trusting the wrong people or making bad choices. The other worst enemies of lottery winners are, as in two of your examples, family members OR choosing the wrong friends, as did Abraham. I do not know for sure, but I would wager that Burch knew some or all of his killers.
One tragic case where no publicity would have helped is the kidnapping and subsequent murder of Graeme Thorne, an Australian boy whose parents had won the lottery; Graeme was killed a month after the win.
I would not do a press conference; there is absolutely NO upside to it. Even before Texas went to anonymous claiming, winners could request minimal publicity. If I lived in a state where a press conference was mandatory, I'd be contacting my state district representative and urging other lottery playing friends to do the same. Call, email, snail mail, I'd do them all and as often as was needed until they at least introduced a bill allowing anonymity...or put a restraining order on me.

Here in California there have been a few who claimed their prize without the required publicity.
Marvin & Mae Costa who won 1/3 of the largest prize so far, the Power Ball worth $1.6 billion. All we know about them are their names.
There was the couple who did not do the press interview. He wanted take out Hawaii style food and she wanted KFC. They decided on the Hawaii food and he bought a lucky & winning ticket.
The wife was a NBC employee in Los Angeles. They are noted in YouTube.
There is also the issue of the Police. Not only the criminals watch the media availability event but the Police do as well. So, be very careful what you say or better yet say nothing. Avoid the press.

From what I understand, here in Florida we do not have to hold a press conference. However, our name, city of residence, winnings, etc. are public record.
I've read that it's advised to give the press conference to get it out of the way. Otherwise you could end up with reporters stalking and annoying you, wanting that exclusive interview for themselves.
That just sounds like the lottery people trying to justify their preference for winners giving a press conference for advertising purposes. If you end up on the 6 o'clock news, with your face over the big phony check with all the zeroes, I can only see one thing happening: A line-up of people on your doorstep by 6:30, and having to endure that for weeks. I'd rather put up with a few reporters annoying me, telling them "No comment", than every meth-head & dodgy type in the vicinity knowing what I look like.
Of course they can look you up, but that requires some effort, which I think most people wouldn't bother with.
I'd want to claim my winnings with a flight out the country booked for a few hours later. Then take off for 6 weeks at least. Hopefully, the interest would die down by the time I got back.
