Once you disassemble your lottery numbers into 2 groups: 1st (or front) digits and 2nd (or back) digits you can perform statistics on each of the groups independently. I do 2 such statistics: frequency and trending, for 4 different time periods: 5,10,15,20 draws. I consider this sufficient for my purposes although extras (either statistics or time periods) can be added.

I look at it like this: If there were a best way to do anything, we'd throw statistics away. We use those for practically everything these days, health care, sports, gambling, lifetime of appliances (even human lifespan).
