The last thing I wanted to do to the anomaly program was add a feature that captures all the current pairs, kicks out the duplicates (including the reverse order pairs like 06 vs 60), and prints them in sort order. Check! That program is done!

Okay, done with the code debug. Time to rest then tomorrow test the code against Jonny's charts that Nodda4me posted plus a few more from Jonny's thread to see if the parameters as I have them produce output that agrees with Jonny's charts. Then I have one little feature that I want to add that will make the charts easier to read. Whew

Found the bug. It was hard to find, but easy to fix. Unfortunately, fixing that bug uncovered yet another bug, but I'm hopeful this one won't be as difficult to find. What made the previous bug so difficult to locate was that it was in a part of the code that worked fine until I added the new module. I figured the new module was the problem, but it was something the new module asked the old working code to do that caused the unexpected results. I finally found the time to get the markup module working except for a final piece that I need to add. I didn't really think about this final bit until I got the markup code working and then it became obvious that I had overlooked a piece. Maybe I'll get a little time tomorrow to finish that up. Once I get that done, it should be easy to post charts for the 25 states that hold two-a-day draws because the program now outputs board-ready code that I can just drop into a post.

The reports I've been posting were manually generated from the raw output of my program. They are time - consuming to produce so I've been working on a module to produce board - ready markup code that that tedious job for me. It's been a bit slow going, but got some uninterrupted time today and made some headway on the code. If I can get a little uninterrupted time tomorrow, then I hope I'll have something to show soon.

It's easy to fixate on a solution to a problem and miss the bigger picture. In this case, I fixated on getting the code sorted for looking at a 21 day window of data and was happily running the tests on the data that I had, which was about 21 days for each state. I kicked the can down the road a bit and separated the core into two parts, the first of which is complete. Yay! The bad news is that I now have to write the post processing code which I originally envisioned being in the core but now will be another sub that kicks out candidates that don't look like what we are looking for. Finally got some quiet time to work on the code. Got frustrated with the rubbish I'd written. Spent the quiet time rewriting the whole thing , so didn't get around to debugging until tonight. That's not precisely what I meant. I meant to make it clear that I am searching forward for a P3 number in about the correct location which contains a pair that agrees with the the pairs that came before. For example, in the case of Connecticut, I's referring to the 4 and the 7 in 475 which are pointed to by the 4 and the 7 above. If I can figure out how to do something by hand, I can do it with code. All through this, my ace in the hole has been a scheme for scoring pairs of numbers with a relative address for each digit plus a number for how far apart the numbers in the pair are. That's the code I just finished. Now I can sort on the addresses and then search for same address AND the same pair. I acquired the most recent month's worth of P3 and P4 data. Comparing what I have vs Jonny's charts I am disappointed to see that Georgia has gone to 3-a-day draws so Georgia longer fits the workup. Rats! I was hoping to take a run at Georgia. We lost Georgia, but we gained Mississippi who are now drawing two-a-day P3 and P4. That's cool, I'm looking forward to seeing how a new-ish lottery does with this workup. So, what states do still fit the workup paradigm?

Ran into a snag with my addressing scheme that only became obvious in the next phase of coding. The fix is obvious, but a little time consuming.

That's programming for you. You really have to check your ego at the door and stop working when you get tired or frustrated.

I'm running test data through my program as we speak.

Getting much closer today. Indexes are always my bugaboo and my stupid program is full of them.

If it works on the test data, I'm going to get back in the business of tracking all the states again. It will take me a month to accumulate enough data to do a run, but it will be a fun project. One thing at a time. First I have to get the code tweaked so it catches the instances in the test data...

Step 1: Create hybrid database with Pick 3 and Pick 4 numbers together.

NOTE: Pick 3 began drawing on 05/22/1989 whereas Pick 4 didn't begin drawing until 09/30/1991, so I threw out the Pick 3 data up to that point.

OPEN QUESTION: Thinking about the above, do we also throw out the one-a-day draw data up to 01/30/1995 when both P3 and P4 went to two-a-day draws? All things considered, I vote yes.
