Risky Advice

Risky Advice
Andy Stirling and Alister Scott, Project Syndicate: "Why do we seem to be witnessing an increasing number of nasty technological surprises? Indeed, this year's Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan and last year's BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico have taken their place alongside older problems, such as ozone depletion. We believe that the way in which scientific advice is developed and communicated lies at the heart of the question. Science is increasingly used to support what are essentially public-policy decisions, particularly concerning new and complex technologies."

Bill Moyers Interviews Andrew Bacevich

Andrew Bacevich on Bill Moyers Journal. (Photo: Bill Moyers Journal)

Bill Moyers, The New Press: "Our finest warriors are often our most reluctant warmongers. They have seen firsthand the toll war exacts. They know better than anyone that force can be like a lobster trap that closes with each stage of descent, making escape impossible. So it was when the liberal consensus lured America into Vietnam during the '60s, and again after 9/11, when neoconservatives clamored for the invasion of Iraq.... One old warrior looked on sadly, his understanding of combat’s reality tempered by twenty-three years in uniform, including service in Vietnam...."

The Past, Present, and Future...

Thomas Pogge on the Past, Present and Future of Global Poverty
"We live in a world where economic positions - income and wealth - are very unevenly distributed, and this leads to the widespread persistence of poverty. The bottom half of humanity is living in severe poverty;... they are extremely vulnerable to even small upsets in their income or in the prices they face of basic necessities... Given the total income and wealth available in the world today, we could easily overcome poverty, which would require raising the share of the bottom half from three to roughly five percent. Unfortunately, the trend is going in the opposite direction."

Can You Find Your Local Newspaper Front Page?

This is pretty cool if you want to keep up with what’s going on where you might have family or friends.  Just put your mouse on a city anywhere in the world and the newspaper headlines pop up...

Double click and the page gets larger... you can read the entire paper on some if you click on the right place.

http://www.newseum.org/todaysfrontpages/flash/

Also, if you look at the European papers, the far left side of Germany will pop up as The Stars & Stripes (European edition). AND, this site changes every day with the publication of new editions of the paper.

Hope you enjoy this.

Vermont First State To Provide Single Payer Healthcare!

"Last month, the Vermont Senate passed legislation, approved earlier by the House, that would establish a single payer health care system in the state. The legislation would make Vermont the first state in the nation to, as Gov. Peter Shumlin (D) said, make health care 'a right and not a privilege.' The governor's office just confirmed for ThinkProgress that Shumlin signed the legislation into law this morning, making the state the first in American history to pass legislation that will establish a single payer health care system to provide care to all citizens."

Spitting in the Face of the Poor

(An excerpt from the article linked below.)

“You want to be a country that creates food stamps? In which case, frankly, Obama is an enormous success - the most successful food stamp president in American history.”

- Presidential candidate and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich

Dear Readers,

The right wing is playing its usual part. Race-bait and attack the poor to justify cutting taxes for the rich. Push laws that disenfranchise young voters. Crack down on health services for women who can’t otherwise afford care. Blame teachers and unions for systemic failures in education. Turn a blind eye to the slow-moving tidal wave sweeping Americans out of their homes and into poverty.

In their hearts, most Americans favor compassion over destruction. If we cast light on the real issues at hand - and show how human lives are being harmed by toxic right-wing tactics - real progress can be made. However, without an independent counterweight against the sanitized mainstream media and the massive right-wing noise machine, the current right-wing agenda will look tame compared to what they’ll try in the future...

Isaac Asimov Speaks Out in 1989

Isaac Asimov is one of my favorite writers, right up there with Carl Sagan...

This article was provided in its original form by the wife of Isaac Asimov, Dr. Janet Jeppson Asimov (used with permission from the estate of Isaac Asimov). An edited version appeared in the Los Angeles Times on March 31, 1989.
