This has evolved into a pretty good thread. I'm surprised that nobody bothered to rate it before now, so I just rated it as Excellent - 5 stars. Nothing changes the odds of hitting a jackpot, but my own experience has shown me that employing some systematic methods can result in cashing more and bigger tickets for the secondary prizes. FWIW, the winning numbers in MM have been all odd or all even only 4 times in the last 100 drawings, which is about 1 less than expected based on probability and pure randomness. Statistically, the departure is completely insignificant. Interestingly, all 4 of those results have happened since June, 30, a period on which we'd have expected the result to happen just over 2 times. 3 of them have happened since mid-August and 2 in the last 4 weeks. I think the only record Mega is pushing for is how long it takes to hit a record. Considering the odds there should have been a much higher jackpot by now but there hasn't been. Ever wish not to win the PB...
I am wishing not...Last night at work, we found our boss's fortune cookie numbers,, and we knew he ran those..Well actually he is my boss at the other store where I work as well.. For a joke we ran and bought up 7 of them... At the time, I thought it would be funny to play his numbers in the event they came out, he would have to split his winnings.. Last year there were only 6 starting jackpots. In general the probability that a starting jackpot will get hit is about 8%. Thus the probability that there will be is winning ticket on a starting ticket is 0.08*6 = 0.48. I checked both the websites of California and New York and both states contribute 32% of their MegaMillions tickets sales to the jackpot and use 18% of those sales to pay the other prizes. I assume the same is true for all MegaMillions states although they don't post it on their websites. Since California decided to go pari-mutuel after each game, winners won't know what they've won until after the money is counted and divided by a formula that depends on the number of winners in the state and
