GTECH scrutinized in bid for Tennessee lottery contracts
GTECH Corp., the lottery giant bidding for Tennessee contracts, has been praised for quick startups and leading technology. But the company has also been criticized for aggressive lobbying and a series of missteps in the 1990s that led to the criminal conviction of one employee and culminated in an overhaul of top managers three years ago. I don't think their past record should reflect adversely on ... the present company, although it does require someone to look at them with a little more due di

CT Lottery aware of security problems before shutting down game
Months before Connecticut Lottery's 5 Card Cash game was suspended, lottery officials knew there was a security issue that eventually allowed the game to be rigged, according to a four-month investigation. 5 Card Cash, a combination instant-win/evening-draw game, was suspended on November 14, 2015 after it was discovered that retailers were using a flaw in the computer system to rig the game to buy only winning tickets. The problem was the printer, say state investigators. If retailers ordere

Illinois Lottery cuts ties with private manager
The split between the Illinois Lottery and its private manager, Northstar Lottery Group, is now official after three years of acrimony over lower-than-expected revenues. The termination agreement, signed Tuesday by Gov. Pat Quinn, comes a little more than three months after he directed lottery officials to sever ties with the company after it fell short of promised revenues for the third consecutive year. At the time, the company had posted record profits to the state, but those figures st

N.J. Lottery throws out GTECH contact
State to rebid lottery deal as lobbyist concerns arise Seeking to erase concerns the state's long-time lottery vendor might have enjoyed an inside edge in winning its latest contract, New Jersey state treasurer Bradley Abelow announced yesterday the state will rebid the job for the third time in 15 months. Abelow ended special hearings that have been going on before former state Supreme Court Justice Daniel O'Hern Jr. and said the department will move quickly to solicit new bids. Du

Ohio Lottery rides record-setting sales growth
Instant tickets continue to drive the highest sales growth in the history of the Ohio Lottery. Successful marketing and an increasing number of players have pushed sales up $55 million, a 4.6-percent increase, in 2006. Patty Vasil, Ohio Lottery deputy director of product development, said $10 and $20 instant games, and games tied to name brand merchandise prizes, may account for the rise in instant game popularity. They attract a player who may not purchase lottery tickets, but likes the

N.C. Lottery may need bigger consequences for lapse in ethics
After taking a seat on the state lottery commission, Charlotte public relations executive Kevin Geddings was required to disclose in a state filing that he had a financial relationship with a lottery company.Geddings did not do it.But the stiffest penalty for a failure to disclose such information is for the N.C. Board of Ethics to recommend removal of the offender from his or her position.North Carolina is one of the few states in the nation without a broad ethics law, though North Carolina law

Florida Scratch Offs - Post Pictures if posible
Hi MeBee18, good info about the last top Mop'oly prize being claimed, and for sure will be interesting to see what happens now (I presume the game will be pulled since even though there's a single $1M prize left, there hasn't been one claimed since Dec so I'm thinking that it's probably not out there). It would be great to know the methodology the Lotto (Scientific Games, for FL) uses in determining when to pull a game. No doubt they have insight into activity of books with major prizes, but

First N.C. lottery chairman Sanders resigns
The first chairman of the North Carolina lottery commission resigned Tuesday after a year on the job that began tumultuously and ended up with ticket sales of more than $400 million. During his tenure, Charles Sanders helped create the North Carolina lottery from scratch, handled ethics questions surrounding the approval of the games and watched three other commissioners give up their seats. Gov. Mike Easley appointed Sanders in September 2005 to a one-year term that expired Aug. 31. In a

N.C. Lottery will pay Scientific Games one way or the other
But Scientific Games now under investigation by the state for possible violations of lobbying law owns the patent to the extra feature, known as Power Play. Someone explain that to me. Do they own the patent on the computer code for printing the powerplay portion in the lottery software machines? Does Scientific Games keep the money collected and they payout to the winners having the powerplay? Like they are taking the powerplay money as a side bet.

Scientific Games appeals N.J. Lottery's award to GTECH
I play both companies a bit (Gtech in MA, SG in NH) and I think Scientific Games makes a far superior lottery terminal. Gtech is still stuck in the past, with dot-matrix printers that don't print well when they get hot. They're still readable, but the bar codes can't scan. I've seen a Gtech machine in Michigan catch fire from the printer head getting too hot after printing 50 tickets, a Gtech machine in MA start smoking after 80, and another Gtech machine in MA get a printer jam, charging me
