US lottery operators worry as fewer millennials line up to play
Young Americans are showing less interest in buying lotto tickets than their parents, prompting lottery officials to worry about the odds for future growth. While overall ticket sales rose 9 percent last year versus 2015, the number of millennials adults in their late teens to early 30s who play is falling. That is creating consternation among leaders of the industry, which generates $80 billion in annual revenue, more than the combined U.S. sales of movie tickets, music and concerts.

Massachusetts lawmakers renew push for online lottery sales
If Massachusetts lawmakers pass a plan backed by State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg, the state lottery could be coming to phones and computers across the Commonwealth. After falling short in the last legislative session, proponents of expanding the state lottery into the digital world are renewing their push. I had to come around to this thinking because I myself hadn't thought about online lottery games, but I saw the way millennials are operating is really online, Goldberg said. This past

New Jersey makes case to Supreme Court on sports betting
New Jersey's chances of getting the U.S. Supreme Court to consider its attempt to allow legal sports gambling hinge on how a bedrock constitutional principle is applied. The state argued in briefs this week that Congress is barred from forcing states to repeal or reinstate their own laws. That's a reference to an issue at the heart of a lawsuit by the NCAA and the four major pro sports leagues, who argue a 1992 federal law barring all but four states from authorizing sports gambling derails N

Chicago mayor toyed with idea of city-only lottery
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has toyed with the concept of establishing a city lottery to help ease the city's financial woes and, while the idea has not progressed, it could get backing from at least one key Democrat in Springfield. That's one of the better nuggets buried in the trove of private emails that Emanuel was forced to release just before Christmas under pressure from a Better Government Association lawsuit. The May 5, 2015, email came from former Illinois Lottery Director Michael

Appeals court hands loss to New Jersey sports betting effort
A federal appeals court on Tuesday dealt another defeat to New Jersey's years long attempt to legalize sports betting, setting aside the state's legal challenge to a federal betting ban. The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals' ruling invalidated a law passed by New Jersey in 2014 that would have allowed sports betting at casinos and racetracks. The court found New Jersey's law violated the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, which limits sports betting to the handful of states

New York Governor signs bill to allow daily fantasy sports
Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill into law Wednesday to allow the resumption of daily fantasy sports in New York. The measure calls the popular online contests a game of skill. That legal definition resolves the central argument in a lawsuit brought against the country's two top fantasy-sports companies by the state attorney general. He had likened the online matches to illegal gambling operations based on chance. This legislation strikes the right balance that allows this activity to conti
