10 things you might not know about the lottery
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn decided this month not to take any more chances with Northstar Lottery Group, the company that runs the Illinois Lottery, after it fell far short of promised revenue. And there's nothing the state can do about it, at least for now. Leroy Fick, 59, of Auburn won $2 million in the state lottery TV show Make Me Rich! last June. But the state's Department of Human Services determined he was still eligible for food stamps, Fick's attorney, John Wilson of Midland, said Tuesday. Eligibility for food stamps is

Tennessee's biggest Powerball winner keeps low profile
Bobbi Hubbard of South Pittsburg, Tenn., keeps busy working on community projects like trying to start a free medical clinic in Marion County. She has lived in the same house for 18 years. On the outside, there's little to show that she hit a $25.5 million Powerball jackpot in 2005, making her the state's all-time big winner as Powerball marks its seventh anniversary in Tennessee. And, unlike some cases in other states where big lottery winners didn't handle their fast fortunes well, Hubbard

S.C. Senate passes expanded gambling law
Includes video report The South Carolina State Senate passed a bill Wednesday that would allow charities, schools and churches to hold raffles legally. Right now the only legal raffle in the state is the lottery. Opponents of this new bill said it would open the door for organized gambling. However, supporters disagree and said it's common sense to update state law that's more than 200 years old. The activity is practiced among organizations in order to raise money for good causes. K

Nevada lottery plan approved by committee
A Nevada Assembly panel voted Thursday to back a plan for a lottery in the nation's No. 1 gambling state, despite arguments that it would compete with slot machines and other games of chance. The Elections, Procedures, Ethics and Constitutional Amendments Committee voted 7-3 to send AJR7, the latest version of a plan that has failed about two dozen times since the 1970s to win legislative approval, to the full Assembly. Let the voters decide, said freshman Assemblyman Paul Aizley, D-Las V

Arkansas voters get first lottery-only proposal
Arkansas banned lotteries even before state lawmakers determined how to properly pronounce the state's name. The 1874 ban held through the era of Hot Springs' illegal casinos and their destruction at the hands of sledgehammer-wielding state troopers nearly a century later. In the time since, attempts to legalize a government-run lottery always included bringing back casino games or something else just as unpalatable for a state squarely in the nation's Bible Belt. Now, though, a proposal b

Arkansas lottery certified for November ballot
The Arkansas secretary of state's office certified a proposed constitutional amendment for the November ballot Monday that would allow voters to decide Lt. Gov. Bill Halter's measure for a state-run lottery to fund college scholarships. Only an anti-democratic move from some other party to try to get this initiative thrown off the ballot will deny Arkansas voters the right and the opportunity to decide this issue for themselves, Halter said at a Capitol news conference announcing certificat

Arkansas Lt. Gov. pushes lottery proposal
Four times members of Lt. Gov. Bill Halter's staff have traveled to various corners of Arkansas to speak about the lottery proposal. When college has never been more important to Arkansas, it's also never been more expensive. Halter says Arkansas needs more college graduates. And the way to fund that is to keep some of the dollars flying out of Arkansas to neighboring states lottery games.
