Lawmaker: Alabama lottery bill 'dead' for session
An Alabama lottery bill is defunct for the legislative session, a key lawmaker said Wednesday.
It's dead for this session. It won't be coming back this session, said Republican Rep. Steve Clouse, who was shepherding the bill in the House of Representatives.
The bill hit a politically fatal mix of conservative opposition to gambling and liberals' feuds over electronic gambling and how to use lottery revenue. Clouse said they do not have the 63 bipartisan votes needed to pass the measure in

World Lottery Association president urges veto of warning labels
Florida's first lottery secretary called on Gov. Ron DeSantis to veto legislation placing warning labels on tickets.
Rebecca Paul Hargrove, now president of the World Lottery Association, said Florida could set an unfortunate precedent. Should the bill (HB 629) become law, it could hurt lottery-funded programs nationwide.
The instant scratch-off games have been around for over 45 years, and sales of these games continue to grow every year, Hargrove wrote in a letter to DeSantis, but more

A plan to allow voters to decide whether to set up a state lottery in Alabama advanced Wednesday in the House of Representatives.
The House Economic Development and Tourism Committee approved the bill. The committee had held a public hearing last week but did not vote.

Alabama lawmakers head toward lottery vote
Alabama lawmakers are heading toward a vote on lottery legislation, with the goal of eventually putting the proposal up to a statewide vote.
The Senate Tourism and Marketing Committee will vote on a lottery bill Tuesday. Senate President Pro Tempore Del Marsh says his goal is to get a bill before the full Senate on Thursday.
The committee is set to consider a bill by Republican Sen. Greg Albritton of Atmore that would limit a lottery to paper tickets. A rival bill to also allow electronic

Arizona becomes latest state to shield lottery winners' names
Arizona joined a growing number of states allowing winners of big lottery jackpots to stay anonymous Wednesday after Republican Gov. Doug Ducey signed legislation letting winners of jackpots of $100,000 or more request that their names not be made public.
The move comes as privacy concerns are increasingly trumping lottery groups' wishes to publicize winners to boost sales and show that the games are fair.
Four years ago, just five states allowed anonymous winners, but the number has now g

Growing number of states move to shield lottery winners
A growing number of states are moving to allow the winners of big lottery jackpots to stay anonymous as privacy concerns are increasingly trumping lottery groups' wishes to publicize winners to boost sales and show that the games are fair.
Arizona could be the next state to join at least nine others with laws that let winners keep their names secret under a proposal headed to Republican Gov. Doug Ducey. Four years ago, just five states allowed anonymous winners, and a handful of others allowe

2nd lottery bill filed in the Alabama Senate
The push for an Alabama lottery is now a competition.
Sen. Greg Albritton, R-Range, filed a lottery bill this week that would establish a state lottery and limit it to paper-based games a move that has drawn opposition in the past from senators who say it could give a major gambling entity in Alabama a unique advantage over others.
It's a simple lottery, Albritton said on Wednesday afternoon. It gives people the right to vote as to whether to have a lottery or not. Straight paper lottery.

Alabama senator announces lottery plan
Alabama State Sen. Jim McClendon of Springville announced this morning he is introducing legislation to set up an Alabama lottery.
The people of Alabama have convinced me, the people in my district, that they would like to be able to buy a lottery ticket without having to drive to another state, McClendon said. They'd like to be able to buy a lottery ticket just like folks in 45 states across our nation can do.
McClendon is a Republican who sponsored lottery legislation in 2016. That leg

Sports betting at Yankee Stadium? It could happen under New York legislation
A sponsor of sports betting legislation in New York said the bill likely would allow for in-person wagering at places like Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden.
Assemblyman Gary Pretlow said Friday the legislation he announced this week is being tweaked and will have that provision unless he receives strong opposition.
That is one of the changes, that we would open it up to have affiliates such as Madison Square Garden, which has expressed an interest in doing this, the Westchester Co
