It's not anti-gravity so to speak. It's creating a vacuum above the craft. Just like a wing on a plane. The flow of air is moving faster on top of the wing than the bottom, thus creating a negative air pressure causing lift. However, in the case of an alien craft, it uses a field to produce the vacuum.
