$330 MILLION: Mega Millions lottery jackpot nears record high
Please bear with me; I am going to post a lengthy description of odds calculations for multiple ticket purchases. Please follow the logic, and don't get frustrated. Some folks here are having a difficult time with the mathematics of odds calculations. My guess is that dealing with huge numbers is causing a problem for them. Maybe if we talk about small numbers, things will become clear. After all, the subject of mathematics works the same way no matter how big or small the numbers are.

State to display odds of winning
When Tennesseans start playing the lottery next year, they'll know something dreamers in many other states don't: the odds of winning.State law doesn't require the odds to be advertised, but Tennessee lottery chief Rebecca Paul believes it's good business to do so. Every place I've ever been has prominently displayed it in brochures, at point of sale, where people get their play slips, where they fill them out, Paul said. It's important to have it there and ready and available for anybody who

Breakfast buddies file suit over lottery ticket
I did few searches and found something which somewhat clarifies these.http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view/56706.htmlProbability vs. Odds, ExplainedProbability (Chance) and OddsAre Not Quite the Same ThingOdds and probability contain the same information, but express it differently. Say a rectangle is divided into boxes ( 1 X 4 matrix) and fill in onebox. The probability of being colored in is 1/4 or 25% but the odds of being colored in is 1:3 or 0.33.For example, when we may say that

Tickets for updated Mega Millions game on sale Saturday
In no way is it better odds of winning a prize other than matching the mega ball. The previous odds of winning the Mega Millions Jackpot were 1 in 175,000,000. The New odds are 1 in 258,890,850. Correct me if i'm wrong but I think the odds of winning the powerball jackpot are about 1 in 195,000,000, which means it will now be easier to win a jackpot in Powerball than it is to win one in Mega Millions. Yeah they made it easier to win a prize all right.. they made it easier to get your one dollar

Mega Millions fuels California lottery sales record
i will be glad to... now i want you take a deep breath and think about this issue removing your emotions (a need to win fueled by irrational thought process's) ...and inserting rational thought(s) instead. this stuff is really easy. someone is always going to win eventually (it could be you). after the odds get high enough that they cannot be covered (like maybe in a pick3 game where the odds are a little more obtainable ), then it becomes a matter of IF you are meant to . i don't see

AMAZING: Minnesota man wins back-to-back lottery jackpots
the odds of it happening are virtually incalculable Geez. Has anyone ever considered making it illegal for morons to be reporters? The odds are extremely steep and extremely easy to calculate. If the odds of doing it once are 1 in 170,000 then the odds of doing it twice are 1 in 170,000^2, assuming the guy only bought two tickets. If he bought more tickets the odds go down. If he bought two tickest for each of those drawings but not for any other day then the odds were 1 in 85,000^2. A

Lotteries long for 'jackpot fever'
Just because someone here doesn't understand the odds doesn't mean that most players don't understand. I think more than half of the players have a good idea want the odds mean, but almost everyone knows that when they hear that the odds are going to be raised that it means they are going to have less of a chance of winning. I know my wife doesn't consider the odds, but I am the one that buys the tickets. I think that maybe 25% of the regular players don't care about the odds, another 25% don

Lotteries long for 'jackpot fever'
The odds are long either way, but yes people are smart enough to know that 75million:1 odds are much better than 150million:1. Whether it's rational to play at all is another question altogether. If your suggesting the odds don't matter then why not just up them to 500million:1? You think people would still play? The fact is that odds do matter, but more importantly odds changes matter more. People know when they increase the odds 25 percent that what is really happening is that players are

Odds are, stunning coincidences can be expected
Odds are odds are odds. The expert statisticians can hardly agree on what the odds are on any given probability or possibility. The one thing they seem to agree on however, is that your odds on a 6 number game are virtually zero. So who bets money on a proposition where you have virtually NO chance of success? Us, because no matter what the odds are we know that at some point in time SOMEONE is going to beat those odds and it just might be one of us. The only odds that matter to us are that t
