Maine lottery scratch tickets may get new controversial name
The Maine State Lottery may soon give a name to its scratch tickets for the first time, but the name isn't sitting well with everyone. A few weeks ago, the Maine State Lottery sent a pamphlet out to its 1,300 retailers, saying it plans to name the tickets Kwikies. I thought that's going to be real uncomfortable for my girls behind the register to have guys come in and say 'Hey, give me a Kwikie,' said David Welch, owner of Village Market in Fairfield. In slang terms, a quickie is a sh

Pa. Gov. may challenge lottery privatization rejection
Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett is expected to say as soon as Friday whether he will challenge Attorney General Kathleen Kane's rejection of his plan to privatize the state lottery. If he does, Corbett likely will file his challenge directly with the state Supreme Court, said Duquesne University law professor Bruce Ledewitz. Ledewitz said the case raises questions that Pennsylvania courts have never addressed before. There's no smoking gun, Ledewitz said. The attorney general's opinion in t

The man who lost a $5 million lottery ticket
Like many who buy a Lottery ticket, Martyn Tott never seriously contemplated the possibility that he would actually win. Of course, it would have been wonderful, but he was largely happy with his rather humdrum life. When he realized he'd scooped the 3,011,065 jackpot, however, his opinion changed somewhat. Suddenly, a social life that revolved around Chinese takeaways, pints of ale and Saturday nights spent rock 'n' roll dancing at the local town hall seemed positively mundane. So, too

Illinois to become first state to allow online lottery sales
A Justice Department opinion issued last year cleared the way. It said the Wire Act of 1961, which bars wagering over telecommunication systems across state or national boundaries, applies only to sports betting. At least 21 states and the District of Columbia are considering online lottery sales or other wagering such as poker, says Frank Fahrenkopf, president of the American Gaming Association, which represents commercial casinos. New York and several other states sell lottery subscripti

But Bill Fleischli, executive vice president of the Illinois Association of Convenience Stores, said those are players who will no longer frequent their corner store. They're actually going to reduce o

Illinois Lottery Superintendent Michael Jones said Monday that he hopes the state will begin selling lottery tickets online in the next three to four months. Officials have long wanted to take the lottery to the web, and the path was cleared Friday with the release of a U.S. Department of Justice legal opinion that supports state-regulated online gambling. (See Ruling by Justice Dept. opens a door on online gambling, Lottery Post, Dec. 25, 2011.) State lawmakers in 2009 approved a massi
