Newspaper to decline advertising from N.C. Lottery Commission
Days before North Carolina launches its lottery with scratch-off ticket sales, television and radio ads are being rolled out across the state. But the publisher of one small paper in eastern North Carolina says he's not going to be taking any lottery advertising. A scam carried out by our state government is no less a scam, wrote Bart Adams, publisher and editor of The Daily Record of Dunn, in a column last week. And ads from the North Carolina Lottery Commission which will no doubt entice

The North Carolina Education Lottery gets under way this week and several major events are planned. On Monday the first advertising will hit radio and television. Illinois Lottery hires Bernie Mac
Add comedian Bernie Mac to the list of people who've hit the lottery jackpot. Mac is receiving $500,000 for about 2-1/2 days of work endorsing a new state lottery game in what lottery officials are calling a phenomenal deal because of the success of his television show. But Mac's six-figure paycheck is drawing criticism from state lawmakers who would like to see the money spent elsewhere. For nearly $23,000 an hour, Mac will lend his name and likeness for two TV ads, two radio ads and

First proposed N.C. lottery ad beats to different drummer
The first television commercial for the North Carolina Education Lottery apparently will be looking literally to drum up support. In a concept draft of the ad released by the lottery commission late Tuesday, a man sits in a chair in his home, starting to scratch off a lottery ticket with a coin. Then a drum roll is heard, and the man gives an excited look to his wife before a marching band walks through their living room and plays a fight song. A narrator then talks about the new lottery,

N.C. Lottery finally gets a logo
It may not be pretty, but at least the North Carolina Lottery finally has adopted a symbol to represent itself. The state's lottery logo will reflect the character of the state, not a generic burst of fireworks. At a commission meeting last week, Tom Shaheen, the lottery's executive director, presented a proposed logo with a flourish, removing a sheet from a logo perched on an easel - but that clearly puzzled some commissioners. After scrapping the failed attempt, officials today approved

New N.C. Lottery ad agency picked after earlier winner withdraws
The North Carolina lottery hired a new ad agency Tuesday to promote its games now less than six weeks from the start after the agency that originally won the job refused to put up a $500,000 bond to ensure its vendors were paid. Howard Merrell Partners of Raleigh, the top bidder last week, quit a few days after winning the contract Feb. 14.

N.C. lottery bill limits commercials
North Carolina lawmakers are slapping limits on how much a proposed lottery can spend on advertising and what the commercials can say, but they may have underestimated both. The General Assembly is scheduled to vote this week on a state budget that includes a lottery. The lottery would be limited to spending 1 percent of its revenue on advertising. That figure, while in line with many lotteries, may not be enough for a lottery's first year.
