Retired Mechanic Wins $50M Lotto Prize

TORONTO — A 73-year-old Woodbridge, Ont., man now has a million dollars for every year he and his wife have been married after winning the jackpot in a Lotto Max draw.

Franco Verone won $50 million in the Oct. 7 draw making him Ontario's biggest single lottery winner ever.

"I feel very good," the Italian immigrant said Tuesday after accepting his cheque at Ontario Lottery Gaming headquarters in downtown Toronto.

Verone was out shopping with his wife soon after the draw when he checked his ticket and realized he had won.

"I was trembling in my car when I saw I matched all seven numbers, so I told my wife right away and she started to cry," the senior said.

The windfall came just two weeks after Verone retired from his job as a mechanic.

"I wish I won 50 years ago," he said with a big smile.

Verone shared the news with his four kids and four grandkids when they gathered around the table for Thanksgiving two weeks later.

Verone said he'd like to do something special for each of his loved ones. He's considering taking his whole family on a trip.

He and his wife will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary next year and Verone said he plans to do something "extra special" to mark the occasion.

But he has no intention of blowing his millions.

"I've worked very hard in my life, very hard," Verone said, explaining he plans to "be careful" spending his winnings.

Verone has played Lotto Max since its inception three years ago and he said he has always played the same seven numbers.

OLG President and CEO said that while there have been other $50 million lottery jackpots, those draws were won by groups of people who shared the prize.

"Mr. Verone is the biggest winner on a single ticket in Ontario history," he said.

Louisiana Credit Card Thief Wins Lottery - Plus Jail Time

Talk about good luck. Waiel "Wally" Mohamad Shihadeh, 39, of Bossier City, La. won $700,000 in the Louisiana Lottery.

Talk about bad luck. The day after he picked up his winnings, he was arrested for credit card fraud.

As it turns out, Shihadeh had allegedly been at his fraud before winning the lottery. It was just, well, luck, that made him a lottery winner one day, a possible felon the next. He owns a truck shop in Minden, La., and he got into a scheme with a truck driver, in which the truck driver used his company's credit card to charge for more fuel than he was actually buying. The truck driver, Thorne Thornton, would then split the extra cash with Shihadeh, allegedly netting them each about $1,500.

Shihadeh was charged with three counts of credit card fraud by persons authorized to provide goods and services and one count each of criminal conspiracy to commit felony access device fraud and money laundering. He was booked into the Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center on a $36,500 bond.

On the plus side for Shihadeh, thanks to his lottery earnings, he was able to post his bond.  On the down side - Shihadeh's fellow prisoners kept asking him if he would post their bonds, too.

CA Lottery Says Sales Of First-Ever $10 Scratchers Ticket Exceed Expectations

Sun-Star staff

The California Lottery said that, just in a matter of weeks, game sales for the Lottery’s first-ever $10 Scratchers ticket, $250 Million Cash Spectacular, have been better than anticipated-- including the game’s first $1 million winner. The winner, who asked to remain anonymous, purchased his winning Scratchers ticket at Donuts Donuts, which is located at 12544 South Street in Cerritos (Los Angeles County).

In just the first three days of sales (beginning September 30) – when the new game had only reached a portion of the Lottery’s 22,000 retailers – total sales were $4.3 million. With each week that passes, sales of the $250 Million Cash Spectacular Scratchers game have pushed lottery ticket sales to new milestones. Among them:

• First full week (10/2-10/8) of $250 Million Cash Spectacular sales helped push total Scratchers sales for the week to nearly $53 million – the single highest week of Scratchers sales on record; and • The first Sunday (10/2) the new ticket was sold helped push Scratchers sales for the day to $6.3 million – the first Sunday the Lottery has had with more than $6 million in total Scratchers sales in at least a year.

Sales should see an even greater spike at the end of the month when the Lottery unveils its new advertising campaign to promote $250 Million Cash Spectacular.

There are still 30 instant $1 million prizes to be won out of the more than 10.6 million available prizes $250 Million Cash Spectacular offers. Donuts Donuts will receive a $5,000 retailer bonus for selling the $1 million-winning ticket.

The $250 Million Cash Spectacular Scratchers ticket is part of the lottery’s continued effort to give out more prizes, create more winners and earn more money for education. The oversized ticket features a unique holographic design and, in total, offers more than a quarter of a billion dollars in prizes. To play, simply match any of “Your Numbers” to any of the six “Winning Numbers” and win that prize. Uncover a “star” symbol and win $100 instantly. Uncover a “WIN” symbol and win all 20 prizes automatically. Overall game odds of winning a prize are 1 in 3.50. Odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 1.2 million
