Teachers Caught On Tape Bullying Special-Needs Girl

When a 14-year-old special needs student in Ohio told her father she was being bullied at school, he figured it was something that many teenagers endure.

“We were shocked,’’ he tearfully said. “We couldn’t know. We didn’t know.’’Then he realized it was his daughter’s teachers doing the bullying.

After being told repeatedly by school administrators that his daughter was lying about being harassed and bullied, he outfitted her with a hidden tape recorder under her clothes. For the next four days, she recorded a series of abusive and cutting remarks from a teacher and a teacher’s aide at Miami Trace Middle School in Washington Courthouse, Ohio.

The father, Brian, and his daughter, Cheyanne (their last names were withheld in the interview), appeared on TODAY with their attorneys Tuesday as snippets from the secret audio tapes were played.

When asked by Ann Curry how all of this made her feel, Cheyanne simply replied, “Sad.’’

‘Are you that dumb?’
The tapes reveal teacher Christie Wilt and her teacher’s aide, Kelly Chaffins, saying disturbing things to Cheyanne in the classroom. Cheyanne, who is now in high school, was in Wilt’s class for three years of middle school. Chaffins has since resigned, while Wilt had to undergo eight hours of anti-bullying and child abuse training. On Monday, Wilt was put on unpaid leave for the rest of the school year, but Cheyanne’s family is hoping to prevent her from ever teaching or working with special needs students again.

Wilt, who did not respond to requests for an interview, can be heard on the recordings alongside Chaffins calling Cheyanne “lazy” and “dumb.”

“Cheyanne, are you kidding me? Are you that dumb? You are that dumb?’’ Chaffins can be heard saying in one instance. “Oh my God. You are such a liar. You told me you don’t know. It’s no wonder you don’t have friends. No wonder nobody likes you because you lie, cheat.’’

On another occasion, Chaffins can be heard poking fun at Cheyanne’s appearance.

“Cheyanne, don’t you want to do something to get rid of that belly? Well evidently you don’t because you don’t do anything at home. You sit at home and watch TV. All night. All weekend.’’

In one instance, Wilt informs Cheyanne she has failed a test before Wilt even takes a glance at it.

“You know what? Just keep it,’’ Wilt can be heard saying. “You failed it. I know it. I don’t need your test to grade. You failed it.’’

Punished on treadmill
“Listening to seven hours’ worth of stuff on this tape, we were up all night, crying, upset, because we didn’t understand why,’’ Cheyanne’s father said tearfully. “Why would they do this?’’

On another day, Chaffins forced Cheyanne to walk on a treadmill as a punishment for getting a question wrong. The school district claimed the treadmill is just there to “refocus’’ students and not punish them. Chaffins later declares that Cheyanne has broken the treadmill and should run in place.

The problems for Cheyanne began in fifth grade and became progressively worse until culminating in an eighth-grade year that was “just terrible,’’ according to her father.

“She got to where she didn’t want to go to school,’’ Brian told Curry. “Cheyanne’s always loved school. We never had a problem with her. She was doing things, (and) starting to harm herself to keep from going to school, so we knew we had to do something at that point.’’

Cheyanne’s parents repeatedly contacted the school, only to be consistently rebuffed.

“We weren’t getting anywhere,’’ Brian said. “Every time we called, it was always, ‘Cheyanne’s lying, Cheyanne’s making up stories. She’s taking parts of this story, parts of that story, and making her own story.’ ’’

Her parents then went to the school’s principal, whose investigation consisted of speaking to Wilt and Chaffins, according to Brian. Feeling they were getting nowhere, Cheyanne’s parents then met with Miami Trace superintendent Dan Roberts.

“(That was) the first time we ever spoke with the man,” Brian said, “and he told us we were bordering on slander and harassment so (we should) let it go and he would guarantee me the best education possible,’’ Brian said.

After the ing evidence on the tapes was brought to school administrators’ attention, Chaffins was asked to resign, while Wilt, who was in charge of the classroom as the teacher, had to undergo the anti-bullying training. Roberts told a local television station that Wilt’s role in the incidents “did not meet what the educational aide (Chaffins) had done.’’

‘I just hope they do something’
The family filed a civil lawsuit against the school district and were awarded $300,000 in damages. But Brian felt he needed to go public with the story to prevent Wilt from being allowed back in the classroom. The family’s attorneys indicated that they would like Wilt to be terminated from her position.

“I just hope they do something with this teacher,’’ Brian said. “She doesn’t need to be around kids at all. She participated in it, she was right there. I’m looking out for (Cheyanne), but also I’m worried about the other children in that class and what they went through.

“She’s (Wilt) just as much to blame, if not more, because she’s the one who takes that oath to protect our children. She has more education than the teacher’s aide.’’

As for Cheyanne, the full effects of the harassment on her are not yet known.

Newt Gingrich To OWS Protesters "Go Get A Job Right After You Take A Bath"

On Saturday, November 19th, Republican President Candidates Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich were guests at the Family Leader Thanksgiving Forum* in Des Moine, Iowa.  Gingrich had this to say about the Occupy Wall Street Movement:

Gingrich, a former U.S. House Speaker, later told the crowd that as president he would encourage legislation to cut federal money from any local or state government that penalizes adoption organizations that don’t allow same-sex couples to adopt.

“The degree to which the left is prepared to impose intolerance and to drive out of existence traditional religion is a mortal threat to our civilization and deserves to be taken head-on and described for what it is, which is the use of government to repress the American people against their own values,” Gingrich said.

Gingrich shared an emotional moment when talking about abortion, noting a boy his family is close to who had to endure both heart problems and a brain tumor yet was full of energy and a drive to enjoy life.

One of his most applauded lines came when he said he would remain unapologetic about going after terrorists or other national threats.

“You come into our country and you kill 3,100 people, and we will do whatever it takes to eliminate your capacity to threaten us ever again,” Gingrich said.

He then said what he would say to government leaders in Iran:  “You have a short time to solve this on your own, and if you don’t, we will solve it for you, and we frankly couldn’t care less what the rest of the world thinks.”

Man Fired For Refusing To Wear "666" Sticker At Work

(AP) ATLANTA - A Georgia factory worker claims in a federal lawsuit that he was fired after he refused to wear a 666 sticker he feared would doom him to eternal condemnation.

Billy E. Hyatt claims he was fired from Pliant Corp., a plastics factory in northern Georgia near Dalton, after he refused to wear a sticker proclaiming that his factory had been accident-free for 666 days. That number is considered the "mark of the beast" in the Bible's Book of Revelation describing the apocalypse.

Hyatt, who said he's a devout Christian, had worked for the north Georgia plastics company since June 2007 and like other employees wore stickers each day that proclaimed how long the factory had gone without an accident.

But he grew nervous in early 2009 as the number of accident-free days crept into the 600s. As the company's safety calendar approached day 666, Hyatt said he approached a manager and explained that wearing it would force him "to accept the mark of the beast and to be condemned to hell." He said the manager assured him he wouldn't have to wear the number.

When the day came on March 12, 2009, Hyatt sought a manager to discuss his request. He said he was told that his beliefs were "ridiculous" and that he should wear the sticker or serve a three-day suspension.

Hyatt took the three-day suspension, and was fired at a human resources meeting several days later. He then filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and his attorney Stephen Mixon said the agency granted him the right to sue the company in August.

The lawsuit, which seeks punitive damages and back pay, said the company forced him into a terrible situation: Keep his job or "abandon his religious beliefs."

The company, now known as Berry Plastics Corp., did not return several calls and emails seeking comment. It has yet to respond to the complaint in court.

Former Green Bay Packer Defensive End Johnny Jolly: A Tale of Addiction

The former starting defensive end for the Green Bay Packers, Johnny Jolly faces an uncertain future with his October arrest -- his second arrest this year and third in four years -- on drug charges. Currently suspended from the NFL and facing a potentially lengthy jail term, Jolly speaks out in an interview with Outside the Lines, coming clean about his codeine addiction, sharing some of his darkest and loneliest moments while following his team's Super Bowl-winning season, and discussing his hopes for the future. Mark Fainaru-Wada reports

"I didn't want to be around anyone. I didn't want to answer no questions. And so I stayed in the room, just drunk, and watched." -- Johnny Jolly, on where he watched last February's Super Bowl

"My only friend was the codeine, and it kept me numb. It kept me from losing my mind. Me losing football is like me losing a loved one, or a bunch of loved ones, at one time." -- Jolly

Barack Obama 1991 TBS Black History Minute

Long before Barack Obama was a president or politician, he was editor of the Harvard Law Review. In his capacity there, he once appeared on television to deliver a bit of knowledge for Black History Month.

In a 1991 TBS "Black History Minute" advertisement that has since resurfaced, Obama talks about Charles Hamilton Houston, the black lawyer best known for mentoring future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and for his legal work combatting Jim Crow laws.

YouTube user Akaczynski, who provides the video below, looks to be compiling an assorted video record of past campaign ads and statements from prominent politicians, including Senate ads from both Obama and GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain.

Have You Heard This One...

A crusty old man walks into a bank and says to the teller at the window:
- I want to open a f**king checking account.

To which the astonished woman replies:
- I beg your pardon, sir. I must have misunderstood you. What did you say?

- Listen up, dammit. I said I want to open a f**king checking account right now!

- I'm very sorry sir, but we do not tolerate that kind of language in this bank.

The teller leaves the window and goes over to the bank manager to tell him about her situation.

They both return and the manager asks the old geezer:
- What seems to be the problem here?

- There's no f**king problem, dammit! the man says, I just won $50 million bucks in the lottery and I want to open a f**king checking account in this bank!

- I see, says the manager, and this f**king woman is giving you a hard time?

OWS Protesters Bringing Message Underground With Plan To 'Occupy The Subway'

A poster for Occupy the Subway at the Fulton Street Station in Brooklyn (credit: Twitter)

NEW YORK (CBS NewYork) —  The group behind the “Occupy the Subway” demonstration planned for this afternoon says they have no intention of disrupting subway service.  The group “99 New York” says in a press release that they will be holding “subway speakouts.” According to the group, the speakouts will consist of unemployed and underemployed people telling their stories in the subway system.

“The Mayor’s office has been characterizing the Subway speakouts as an attempt to ‘shut down’ the subways. THIS IS FALSE. The Subway speakouts will not involve any attempt to disrupt subway operations,” the group said in a press release.  The clarification came after dozens of arrests in lower Manhattan at the beginning of Occupy Wall Street’s “Day of Action.”

The demonstrators are planning to target 16 stations starting at 3 p.m., including Union Square, Borough Hall in Brooklyn, the Jackson Heights station in Queens, the stop at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx and the ferry terminal on Staten Island.

Here is their precise itinerary:

  • Manhattan: A/C/1 station at 168th and Broadway– Carmen Perez, single mother living with her brother because lack of affordable housing
  • Manhattan: A/B/C/D station at 125th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue; 4/5/6 station at Union Square– Monnie Callan, retired hospital worker caring for elderly sister
  • Brooklyn: A/C/L/J/Z station at Broadway Junction– Edgar Andrade, small business owner struggling to support family through layoffs
  • Brooklyn: 4/5 station at Borough Hall– Valerie Peterson, underemployed healthcare worker relying on children to make ends meet, struggles with diabetes
  • Bronx: 4 train station at Fordham Road– Wanda Fuentes, underemployed home care worker caring for mother with Alzheimers
  • Bronx: 4/D station at 161st St – Yankee Stadium– Minerva Morales, unemployed single mother and Christine DeLeon, evicted tenant
  • Bronx: 6 station at Hunts Point Avenue– Rosa Balbuena, unemployed mother of 4
  • Queens: E station at Jackson Heights/Roosevelt Avenue– William Berry, veteran and small business owner
  • Queens: E/J/Z station at Jamaica Center Parsons/Archer– Juan Pelaez, lost job after workplace injury, facing eviction
  • Staten Island: St. George/State Island Ferry Terminal– Zaida Moreno, fired due to budget cuts and hasn’t found stable work for 2 years, now suffering medically due to stress

It's all planned just in time for school dismissal and the evening rush.

Bill Dobbs is one of the organizers of the “Day of Action.” He says the massive protest is meant to galvanize public support for the Occupy movement.  “The message is really about who gets what in this country,” he said. “We are the 99 percent. Who gets the safety net? Who gets thrown under the bus?”

Veteran Wins Lottery On Veterans' Day

Donald Hillian

Donald Hillian is a navy vet. On November 11 2011, Veterans' Day, he took the day off. It was to be a day of quiet reflection for him, a day to remember the members of the armed forces who had died in the line of duty.

On that day, Donald didn't do anything special. He did normal things that people do every day. He woke up and went out for breakfast. He got a haircut. At 11 am, he probably observed a moment of silence. Then he stopped at the store to buy a lottery ticket. He bought a quick picket ticket for Connecticut Lottery's Classic Lotto game. The day was uneventful. That night he went to sleep.

The next morning, Donald Hillian went to the store and scanned his Classic Lotto ticket in the ticket checker. He won! Donald won the jackpot of $1.5 million!

It's kind of fitting that a navy vet wins the lottery on Remembrance Day. On Monday November 14, Donald claimed his prize at Connecticut Lottery headquarters. "I still feel like I'm dreaming" is all he could say!

The Clasic Lotto game is a 6/44 game, meaning that you have to match 6-out-of-44 numbers to win the jackpot. The odds of matching all 6 numbers are approximately 1-in-7-million.  The winning numbers for the November 11th drawing were 1, 4, 6, 24, 29, 34.

At the time of his win, Donald Hillian lived in Hartford, Connecticut. He said that he wished his mother was still alive so that he could share the winnings with her. She passed away in 2007.
