When you backtest systems..
I usually backtest a system or strategy throughout the entire draw histories of every state that I have (I'm talking Pick-3 here). Normally, you can calculate the probability of a system hitting before you even start the backtest. The success rate of every system normaly performs very close to its true overall probability over the long term. Finding a system that way over performs its probability in every (or most) states would indicate a true odds-breaking system.....so far, I've found non

Pondering Question...
If you want to know how hard a lottery game is to win, you calculate the odds (1:possible combinations), the one with the most possible combinations is the hardest. I recently pointed that out in another thread where the players were winning a lot playing the Pick6 WV Cash25. The Cash25 is a 6/25 game(1:177,100) and winning it is a lot easier than winning a 6/49 game (1:13,983,816). Most Pick6 (6/44-59) games have jackpots of $1M or more and Cash25 had a jackpot of $25K.

Is PB inferior to MM?
When calculating the expected value of the jackpot prize, the probability of a single or multiple winners must be taken into consideration. Those probabilities are affected by the odds and the sales for that particular draw.It is for that reason that the expected value rises slowly as the jackpot grows. That is, as the jackpot grows, sales also grow and increase the possibility of a multiple winner.I calculate the expected value of the lotteries I play and only play when the expected value is re

Boxing numbers, how is it done?.....
When I go to play at the store I go to I see where people have written down pick 3 and 4 numbers. They do mathmatical functions and calculate a certain number. My friend told me that was called boxing numbers. What are they doing? I had a friend tell me some people know ways to increase their odds on playing the right numbers.

Winning!
Most of the above replies are correct: The vast majority of players do not win because of the astronomical odds. About 70% of all lottery entries are quickpicks and 70% of all jackpots are won by them. Conversely, 30% of entries are non-random and 30% of jackpots are won by people choosing numbers. Playing the same numbers does not impact chances either way. It's not difficult math to calculate........... just difficult to accept. The best of luck to all.

pick 3 probability
By what formula does one calculate the odds of winning a pick3 type game if one buys 100 random tickets? Would it be 10%?Suppose the lottery sells only 5000 random tickets, what % of all numbers are likely to remain not sold?Bertil

odds are odds....regardless of coincidences
Not true. The overlapping numbers happen when you calculate all 1,000,000 possibilities. i.e., 1-2-3-4-5 is possibility #1, 1-2-3-4-6 is possibility #2, etc. If you buy both tickets you will have made your odds 2 in 1,000,000, even though 4 out of 5 numbers overlap.-Todd

Winning the lottery with maxim issue
Are you sure it didn't state there was a way to accurately calculate your odds of picking the next winning combinations using the formula n!/k!(n-k)!. ! stands for factoral and that fuction would be on a scientific calculator. With that formula, you can calculate the total numbers of combinations possible.RJOh

WHO is going to show you how to win w/ positive R.O.I. Long term
No one can overcome the odds. The people who win are just lucky. It doesn't matter which numbers you pick. Any one of the 80 ping pong balls in the hopper can be drawn with exactly the same chance of being drawn. The Baccarrat and Roulette past result displays are there to fool people into playing, thinking that they will have an edge if they play based on past results. The fact is that IT DOESN'T MATTER! I do play progressive keno when the jackpot gets high enough, but that's pretty rare.

Systems Vs. Numbers-The Big Question
I pretty much agree with the sentiment in AllenB post. I use Foxpro (currently) to test out theories, then using that theory I scroll through all the tickets to do a What if I use this theory to calculate profit/loss and overall odds. Then if it is good, then I write a program to predict the next ticket(s) and but it. For example, with my latest version of my Illinois Lotto predictor, I went from the standard 13% overall odds to a 25% overall odds of getting a refund or greater. Been doing
