State-by-State Comparison: Scratchers Sales vs PB/MM Sales
I went through every US state lottery's most recent financial report to see how sales of scratchers compare to sales of Powerball and Mega Millions. Some states didn't have granular data available, but where it is available, you can see scratchers out-sell PB/MM by a wide margin. In two states (OR and SD) lottery sales are dominated by video lottery, and scratchers and draw game sales are just a drop in the bucket. Two other states (ND and WY) don't even sell scratchers. In all states, I did not

Then why are ticket sales so strong?

Florida Lottery Fantasy Five going to twice a day--will you still play?
Players play FF5 for no other reason than to win the jackpot. The lower tier prizes are just awful. I matched three numbers last night and won back the ten bucks I spent yesterday. The second tier prize for matching four numbers was a paltry $78. The only way the second tier prize is any good is if there was a rolldown due to no jackpot winner. Say so long a nice life enhancing jackpot win. If you play after March 20th, the bigger jackpot will most likely be for the evening draw, but it

Maybe we are making a mistake in predicting random lotteries as a whole, let's divide it into 4 part
It's difficult to determine which lottery game San wants to discuss because he seldom says it upfront. It wasn't until page two when San finally mentioned the path to pick3 . I'm in totally agreement that the majority of MM and PB ticket sales are QP and when the ticket buying frenzy starts, an estimate of 90% of sales are QPs might be on the low side. Don't recall any pick 3 buying frenzies because that jackpot never changes. I won't say for a fact the majority of pick 3 sales are self pic

Florida Lottery Fantasy Five going to twice a day--will you still play?
Agreed that there will be plenty of midday drawings and also evening draws that there wont be a jackpot winner. That's what happened in New York's 5/39 game, Take5, when The New York Lottery went to two Take5 draws per day. I expect that when there is a jackpot winner, the larger amount will appear in the evening drawing. The midday draw sales window has the overnight hours in it when ticket sales will be low. At about 6 AM ticket sales will probably increase but there are only six hours until 1

There doesn't seem to be a huge frenzy for the 1.1 Billion Megamillions prize. :/
Ticket sales are down quite a bit from the last time Mega Millions had a billion dollar JP in July. The advertised JP started out at 1.02 billion for the July 29 drawing and ended up moving to 1.1 billion and then finally ending up at 1.28 billion. Ticket sales for that drawing were 703 million dollars. For this drawing the advertised JP started at 1.1 billion and never moved. Ticket sales for the drawing were 287 million. Maybe the 2 billion PB drawing in Nov has something to do with it.

1 billion lottery proves we're in a recession
The lottery machines here were lagging because of strong sales. Over 1 1/2 million tickets were sold for the Tuesday drawing and sales for tonight could beat the old record in sales. And most players probably believe the jackpot will be won so they are buying tickets regardless of economy opinions.

Small Jackpot increases
Just a few years ago a $400 million jackpot would increase over a $100 million after a draw wasn't won. The Mega Millions was at $410 last draw and only went up $30 million after nobody won. Are sales really down that much now? If sales are really down that much compared to years past, why aren't the lottery companies making changes to get more people playing again?

CA SuperLotto slow-build 6 months
CA SuperLotto Plus is idiotic. By regulation, the advertised annuity value has to increase by exactly 1 million dollars with every rollover, and the cash value is calculated from that number, regardless of sales . It works the opposite of every other annuitized jackpot lottery where sales dictate the cash value and the cash value dictates the annuity. The people who devised SLP's bizarre rollover rules probably thought it was a neat advertising strategy, but didn't realize nobody ever takes the

No More Self Pick Play Slips Accepted
At this point based on the poll, about 1 / 3rd have seen this. Interesting that sales were down this last draw, too. The recent Lottery Post article says the sales were a miss. $900 MILLION: Powerball jackpot rises, but sales miss in last draw makes for small increase
