Multi-state lottery jackpots are growing at a smaller pace
People are not spending the money they did as recently as 2 years ago. Sales on the MM really seemed to drop when they changed the matrix. Jan of 2012 ticket sales for a 15 drawing period where the JP rolled 15 times were 536 mill and the annuity stood at 290 million. This last JP that was won after 15 rollovers the sales were 305 mill and the annuity stood at 172 mill. That is a 40% decrease in ticket sales from just 2 years ago. Powerball sales are also down and i am guessing in April when the

Are Mega Millions sales really that bad now?
If the subject isn't clear enough, the discussion is about whether or not MM sales are worse than they used to be. Changes to the game may explain why sales are different, but they're irrelevant to whether or not there is a difference. Offering tickets to 50 or 100% more potential customers should increase sales regardless of the quality of the product, so sales should obviously be higher than they were when far fewer states sold the game. If nothing else resulted in less player interest in buyi

Are Mega Millions sales really that bad now?
Where did you find those far more potential players I found most of them in the 23 states that didn't sell MM until January 2010. You know that doubling the number of states selling tickets increases the number of potential players, right? For the 10 starting jackpots before those states were added sales totaled about $154 million. The 10 starting jackpots immediately after adding those states had sales of about $183 million. The most recent 10 starting jackpots have racked up sales of abou

Interstate Lottery Sales
I think this would keep lotteries in check.

Was that the official concession speech from Mega Millions?
I really can't, it's just too hard to go by individual intervals of the JP. Who knows what was happening then: PB JP values, Friday versus Tues,(Friday inc is higher) holiday, terrorist attack, etc. The JP is a derivative value from the main value I'm looking at: Sales. My other graphs were a big picture detailed look at one run imposed over another, showing the sales increase through the run as time goes by on new matrix, compared to the preceding run. I have another big big picture view

powerball sales continue to drop
For the past 10 PB drawings ticket sales total 268 million and the advertised JP is for 149 million. Looking back 2 years ago in just about the same time of the year ticket sales for 10 drawings were 460 million and the advertised JP was for 317 million. In just 2 years sales are now just a little more than half of what they were just 2 years ago. I did not total MM sales but just glancing at them can see they are quite a bit smaller then they use to be. I recall talk awhile back about some day

Are Mega Millions sales really that bad now?
You're only looking at one drawing here or there. I clearly compared the only three runs with jackpots over $200 million since the last matrix change. The sales at the start of a run are much lower even with more states. Did you miss the memo saying there are now a possible 258,890,850 outcomes, sales for Friday were 44 million, about a 17% of chance of a winner, and the numbers on the tickets are only valid for the day of that drawing? While a portion of the amount of sales is a

Vent your displeasure - CANADIAN 649
Shlep,I do not want to discourage your campaign to complain about the new price, but I think that the only thing the lottery corporations will pay attention to is sales. If sales go down, then they will get rid of or change the $2 ticket price. If sales go up or stay level, then nothing will change. Sales speak louder than complaints. This is why the original 649 game was changed. Sales were going down year after year. They had to do something. One option was to reduce the guaranteed minimum jac

State-by-State Comparison: Scratchers Sales vs PB/MM Sales
I went through every US state lottery's most recent financial report to see how sales of scratchers compare to sales of Powerball and Mega Millions. Some states didn't have granular data available, but where it is available, you can see scratchers out-sell PB/MM by a wide margin. In two states (OR and SD) lottery sales are dominated by video lottery, and scratchers and draw game sales are just a drop in the bucket. Two other states (ND and WY) don't even sell scratchers. In all states, I did not
