Penn. Lottery contributions decline for first time in 6 years
Lottery Not Blaming Slots for Flat Sales Pennsylvania's lottery sales stumbled in the just-ended fiscal year as slot machines came on line finishing flat after a half-decade of huge gains spurred by bigger games, more retailers and glitzier advertising. After subtracting expenses, commissions and prize money, the lottery contributed less money to state coffers than the prior year for the first time since 2001. State lottery officials insisted the arrival of slot-machine gambling in

N.C. Lottery sales fall short
North Carolina's lottery sales have tumbled since July, and the game's director predicts that under the best scenario the lottery will generate $75 million less for education than projected in the current state budget. The sales of numbers games, such as Powerball and Cash 5, are up slightly since July, but scratch-and-win ticket sales have plummeted. Scratch, or instant, tickets are supposed to provide the growth in lotteries nationally, but in North Carolina, sales shrank from $52 milli

Skyrocketing scratch-off sales indicate lotto players are resilient
By Kate Northrop While ticket sales and jackpots are down for draw games like Powerball and Mega Millions, Americans have no problem finding entertainment in other lottery alternatives. Vendors have been selling tickets for multi-state games during stay-at-home orders, but customers are understandably reluctant to take the time to pick out numbers and hand cash to attendants while making essential shopping trips. Instead, quick buys like scratch-off tickets make great substitutions for the

Oklahoma Lottery sales hurt by lagging economy
Lottery ticket sales declined about $11.3 million in the past fiscal year, mainly because of a downturn in the economy, Oklahoma officials said. Powerball sales, which make up the majority of lottery sales, tumbled an estimated $7.6 million, partly because of the economy and a lack of significant jackpots, Jim Scroggins, executive director of the Oklahoma Lottery Commission, said Tuesday. The Oklahoma Lottery is expected to contribute $66.7 million to public education for the 2010 fiscal y

Florida Lottery's new Wheel of Fortune scratch-off game sets sales records
The Florida announced last week that Scratch-Off ticket sales for the newest $5 Scratch-Off game, Wheel of Fortune, exceeded $6.1 million in its first week, setting a record for the highest first week of sales by any game at that price point. The game also set a record for having the highest single week sales ever for a $5 game, with $7.6 million in sales in its second week, eclipsing the previous record set by $500,000 Gold Rush in 2015 by 10 percent. Every new game the Florida Lottery r

Are Mega Millions sales really that bad now?
The sensible comparison, and what the OP appears to be asking, is whether or not more recent changes have resulted in slower sales. It says really that bad now which to me means terrible overall sale compared to another period of time. Current sales, October 2014 are $281.59 million compared to $167.1 million in October 2013 and $142.6 million in 2012. When someone asked how bad , we should ask compared to what because the matrix change is just one-year-old. And now MM Friday sales are comp

Pari-Mutuel Powerball
But the lottery has a budget, and somewhere down the line, they may have to trim some of the prize percentage from another game to cover the losses from a high payout P3 or other overpaid game. That's the reality. California has almost six times more potential lottery players than the state of Massachusetts, but the annual ticket sales are about $400 million more in MA. The net profit to ticket sales in Cali is 30.2% compared to 17.6% in MA so it's obvious MA has a much higher prize ratio.

Weak Powerball Sales?
You can't just make numbers up. Powerball sales in Texas last calendar year were $140m. You mean to tell me that 25% of sales came from one $60m jackpot. Impossible. The latest roll from $50-$60m generates $1.9m in sales. In 2011, similar rolls had sales of $1.2m, $1.3m, $1.2m and $1.3m. Average sales of $1.25m to $1.9m is a 50% increase in sales. The margin on a draw game like Powerball is about 50%. 50% of $1.9m is greater than 50% of $1.2m. Losing customers and selling less tick
