NEW YORK – Kiss, LL Cool J and the Red Hot Chili Peppers could be among next year's inductees at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

They are part of an eclectic group of 12 acts in contention for the 2010 class. Other first-time nominees include Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, The Hollies and songwriter Laura Nyro.

Some of the names on the ballot have been there before — Donna Summer, Darlene Love, ABBA, the Chantels, and the Stooges.

Only five acts make it in. The 25th annual induction ceremony is slated for March 15 in New York City. The inductees will be announced in December.

Dust Cloud Chokes Eastern Australia

Dust Cloud Chokes Eastern Australia
By Phil Mercer
Sydney
23 September 2009

A huge cloud of red dust driven by gale-force winds is choking Australia's biggest city, Sydney. Residents have described scenes from a Hollywood disaster movie after waking to an eerie dawn.

The suffocating haze has shrouded some of Sydney's most recognizable landmarks.

The Sydney Harbor Bridge and the Opera House were almost lost in a monstrous cloud of dust that has been whipped up by thunderstorms in drought-hit areas of the New South Wales outback.

The dust is causing misery and chaos. Flights have been diverted and ferries canceled, while traffic has been forced to a crawl because of poor visibility.

Many residents are forced to seek refuge indoors, while those who battle the elements have been bombarded by tiny particles of dust propelled by gale-force winds.

Doctors warn people with asthma, and heart and lung diseases to stay indoors but even the healthy suffer under the conditions.

Professor Gordian Fulde from St. Vincent's Hospital in Sydney says emergency department staff members have treated a procession of patients.

"It has been unbelievable," he said. "From nearly the crack of dawn we have had joggers come in - fit young men and women - who have just had real trouble breathing and we have had to treat them. Even just half an hour ago we had an elderly gentleman who basically collapsed and he is quite ill because he just could not breathe because of the dust, so really it has had a major effect."

Dawn broke with a fiery red light in Sydney, as the sun hit the blanket of dust that now has spread across two states. Further north, parts of Queensland are also affected.

The weather bureau calls it the worst dust storm to hit this part of eastern Australia since the 1940s. The conditions are expected to persist into Thursday and there are warnings that more wild weather is on the way later in the week.

The past day has been tough for other parts of the continent; Victoria state was hit by two minor earthquakes, hail storms hit parts of western New South Wales and parts of Queensland suffered bushfires.

While Australia is one of the most vulnerable nations to climate change, scientists do not directly link extreme weather events such as storms and drought to warmer global temperatures. Instead, they say these events are largely due to natural variability.

Lamar Odom to marry Khloe Kardashian Sunday

Lamar Odom engaged to Khloe Kardashian (update: They are getting married Sunday.)

Lamar

Lamar Odom isn't a free agent off the court either.

After a whirlwind six-week courtship, the Lakers forward is engaged to be married to reality TV star Khloe Kardashian.

"Khloe and Lamar want to get married before Lamar has to go away for training, and the season starts up [this fall]," a source told Us Weekly. "They are hoping to pull together a wedding within the next few weeks so they can get married and have a honeymoon."

And Kim Kardashian, Khloe's more famous sister, seems happy about the union.

"They're very, very happy," Kim told People.com. "They are literally inseperable. Khloe thinks he's amazing and makes her laugh and smile constantly."

The reality star plans to marry Odom this Sunday in the Los Angeles area, multiple sources confirmed to people.com. The ceremony is being thrown together so quickly that guests are being notified by phone that formal invitations will arrive this week, the sources add.
But the best news: Finally Vanessa Bryant will have someone to hang out with during games.

Serena Williams To Headline Tampax Ads

Updated: September 21, 2009, 1:33 PM ET

Serena to headline Tampax ads

Associated Press

CINCINNATI -- The Procter & Gamble Co. is featuring tennis star Serena Williams in a lighthearted ad campaign for its Tampax brand that begins just weeks after her U.S. Open outburst.

The Cincinnati-based consumer-products maker announced Monday that Williams will take on Tampax's "Mother Nature" character in new print advertising in October magazines. P&G officials say Williams represents the energy, independence and strength of women they want to celebrate.

The new campaign was in the works before Williams' tirade this month against a lineswoman at the U.S. Open, which brought a $10,000 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct.

"Clearly she admitted she made a mistake; she apologized," P&G spokesman David Bernens said. "We support her apology."

Williams has highlighted a number of other campaigns, including for Nike and Gatorade.

P&G has recently taken a light approach to advertising its tampon products, with the current theme called "Outsmart Mother Nature."

Justine Henin returning to WTA??

Belgian media reports: Henin to return

Associated Press

BRUSSELS -- Former top-ranked player Justine Henin will announce her return to competitive tennis Tuesday, according to two top Belgian newspapers.

La Derniere Heure and Le Soir reported the comeback Monday

Her spokeswoman did not return phone calls and Henin's Web site had no comment on the rumors.

Last year, Henin shocked the tennis world by announcing her retirement while still ranked No. 1.

As recently as May, she complained that the sport had left her with so many physical ailments that a return was unthinkable.

Henin, a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, has begun training again, but has refused to comment on plans for a possible return over the past month.

At 27, it would certainly not be too late for a comeback, as compatriot Kim Clijsters proved when she won the U.S. Open earlier this month.

Having played barely a month on the tour after 2½ years in retirement, Clijsters won the last Grand Slam of the season, beating both Venus and Serena Williams on the way to the final.

After Clijsters' victory, Henin praised her performance on her Web site.

"What you have come to achieve there is incredible," wrote Henin. "I very warmly congratulate you on your magnificent victory."

'Mad Men,' '30 Rock' top Emmy Awards

  • "Amazing Race" wins best reality competition, its seventh straight year

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- After starting with 16 nominations, "Mad Men" won just three Emmy Awards at the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night -- but one of them was the big one, best drama series.

The AMC show about ad agency executives in early 1960s Manhattan often competed against itself, particularly in the category of episode writing, where it had four of the five possible nominations.

"Mad Men" also won best drama last year.

"30 Rock" won best comedy at Sunday's awards. The show won five Emmys overall.

"We want to thank our friends at NBC ... for keeping us on the air, even though we are so much more expensive than a talk show," said star Tina Fey in accepting the honor. Gallery: Major Emmy winners

Glenn Close won best actress in a drama for her performance in "Damages," but she turned her speech into praise for her colleagues.

"I want to salute what I call my 'category sisters,' " she said. "I respect you, and I'm inspired by your talent." She also paid tribute to the show's writers.

Bryan Cranston of AMC's "Breaking Bad" won his second straight Emmy as best actor in a drama.

"I don't know what I'm doing up here," he said. "I feel like Cinderfella. ... I stand here a humbled man."

Alec Baldwin won best actor in a comedy series for his performance in "30 Rock."

Toni Collette ("The United States of Tara") won best actress in a comedy. Collette's win was a mild surprise, as Tina Fey, of "30 Rock," was considered a heavy favorite.

Jon Cryer ("Two and a Half Men") won best supporting actor in a comedy.

"I used to think that awards were just shallow tokens of momentary popularity, but now I realize they are the only true measure of a person's real worth as a human being," Cryer said.

Cherry Jones ("24"), Michael Emerson ("Lost") and Kristin Chenoweth ("Pushing Daisies") also won for their supporting work -- Jones and Emerson in dramas, and Chenoweth in a comedy.

"The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" was honored twice, for its writing in the variety, musical and comedy series category and as the best overall show in that genre.

"The Amazing Race" continued its domination of best reality competition series, winning the category for the seventh straight year. VideoWatch the stars show off their beautiful outfits »

"Race" producer Bertram Van Munster kept his on-stage speech short, but backstage -- with at least a dozen co-workers behind him holding Emmy statuettes -- he had more to say. Blog: Behind the scenes at the Emmys

"Survivor," "Big Brother" and his show "were really the locomotives for network television to make good reality shows. I am proud we have set a very high standard in doing the right thing," he said.

Van Munster said he would work on the show "until I'm 100 years old. It's no problem. The audience will decide when it's over, if we don't get the ratings," he said.

"Survivor's" Jeff Probst took home the award for host of a reality competition.

PBS' "Little Dorrit" also surprised observers, taking home Emmys for best miniseries, as well as writing and direction among miniseries and movies -- categories expected to go to HBO programs such as "Grey Gardens" or "Into the Storm." The miniseries topped all programs with seven Emmys.

"Grey Gardens" did win the made-for-television movie category, and five Emmys total. iReport.com: Sound off on Emmy winners, losers

The Emmy broadcast featured plenty of absurdist humor, with presenters being introduced with mentions of obscure roles and show announcer John Hodgman, best known as "PC" from the Apple Mac ads, welcoming some winners with non sequiturs.

It also had its share of gallows humor, reflecting the decline in network viewership -- and the decline in Emmy Awards viewership as well.

Host Neil Patrick Harris, in a rousing opening number and routine called "Don't Touch That Remote," practically begged viewers to hang around. Mentioning several other networks and competing programs, he plaintively asked, "Can't you watch it later?"

Chenoweth won the first Emmy of the evening for a show, "Pushing Daisies," that's no longer on the air. "Pushing Daisies" won four honors total.

"I'm unemployed now, so I'd like to be on 'Mad Men,' " she said. "I also like 'The Office' and '24.' "

Perhaps presenters Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Amy Poehler summed up the mood best. Introducing a category early in the show, Louis-Dreyfus pulled no punches.

"Amy and I are honored to be presenting on the last official year of network broadcast television," she said.
