Querrey rallies past Isner for Serbia title

Querrey rallies past Isner for Serbia title

Associated Press

BELGRADE, Serbia -- Sam Querrey survived a match point as he rallied to beat John Isner 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 Sunday to win an all-American Serbia Open final.

The second-seeded Isner wasted a match point in the second set while serving and leading 5-3.

His powerful first serve seemed to have deserted him in the crucial moments as Querrey converted a break point with a forehand passing shot.

The third-seeded Querrey then converted his fifth break point in the ninth game of the third set before serving out the match for his fourth career ATP tour title, and first on clay.

Isner hit his racket to the ground after sending a forehand into the net on the last point of the match.

"It's not easy playing against my friend," Querrey said of his frequent doubles partner. "I congratulate John on a very good week here in Belgrade."

An all-American clay court final was last played in Europe in 1991, when Jim Courier defeated Andre Agassi for the French Open title.

Querrey, 22, won the Memphis title in February, when he also topped Isner in the championship match.

"I had my chances, but he deserved to win," Isner said. "We'll be back the next year."

Henin, Sharapova out in first round

Associated Press

MADRID -- Former top-ranked players Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova crashed out in the first round of the Madrid Masters on Sunday.

Aravane Rezai beat Henin 4-6, 7-5, 6-0, and Lucie Safarova edged Sharapova 6-4, 6-3.

Henin said she had not fully recovered after falling ill following her win at the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart last weekend, her first title since coming out of retirement.

"Madrid has been a difficult experience this year and I hope that next year will be better," she said.

Sharapova battled back from a poor start to level the first set at 4-4 before Safarova took control by winning the last six games of the match.

"It's a struggle trying to find the rhythm," Sharapova said. "I thought she played really solid, good tennis and did everything she needed to win the match. More solid than me anyway."

Fourth-seeded Venus Williams beat Swiss qualifier Stefanie Voegele 6-4, 6-2.

On the men's side, ninth-seeded David Ferrer beat Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 7-6 (2). Ivo Karlovic topped Evgeny Korolev 6-4, 7-6 (5) to set up a second-round match with sixth-seeded Fernando Verdasco. Juan Monaco beat Simon Greul 6-1, 6-1.

Serena wastes match point in semifinal loss

Williams wastes match point in loss

Associated Press

ROME -- Top-ranked Serena Williams squandered a match point and lost to Jelena Jankovic 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) on Friday in the semifinals of the Italian Open.

In her first tournament back from a three-month knee injury, Williams served for the match twice in the third set and was broken both times. She hit a backhand long on match point at 5-4.

Williams took a 5-2 lead in the tiebreak but hit a return long and missed four consecutive shots to send Jankovic into her second final of the year.

In Saturday's final, the seventh-ranked Jankovic will meet Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain, who beat Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 6-2. Jankovic is aiming for her third title at the Foro Italico after winning in 2007 and 2008.

With Williams up 5-3, Jankovic served an ace but Williams had her hand up and the chair umpire ruled that the American had called time and Jankovic had to serve again. That drew an argument from the Serb and whistles from the crowd in the Foro Italico's new 10,500-seat stadium, which was only about half full.

"I wasn't playing the points right. I feel like I should have won, could have won," Williams said. "I think I had an apple in my throat, but it is what it is."

Sidelined since winning the Australian Open in January, Williams didn't want to dwell on the loss.

"I can't beat myself up over it -- I just came back," she said.

Jankovic thought her ace should have counted in the tiebreak.

"For me, when the server comes to the line the receiver had to be ready. That's the rule, right?" Jankovic said. "I just had to regroup and refocus. I didn't want to waste my energy -- and that's what I basically did. Overall, it was good for me to be able to stay strong mentally."

Ivanovic, whose ranking has slipped to No. 58, struggled against Martinez Sanchez's serve-and-volley game. The 26th-ranked Spaniard also used an effective drop shot.

Jankovic routed Venus Williams 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals on Thursday and became only the seventh player to beat both Williams sisters in the same tournament -- joining Aranxta Sanchez Vicario, Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, Kim Clijsters, Lindsay Davenport and Justine Henin. Clijsters is the only player to achieve the feat twice.

"To beat both Williams sisters in two days is really amazing," Jankovic said. "I'm really proud of myself. It doesn't happen too often."

Jankovic and Serena Williams, the 2002 Rome champion, had a tough time finding their groove at the start, with Williams the first to hold serve to go up 3-2.

Williams then stepped up her attacking game, trying to keep the points short with approach shots to the corners to set up easy putaways at the net.

Williams won the first set with a big forehand return of serve that Jankovic shanked way off court. However, Williams began to struggle on the longer points and Jankovic broke at love to go up 4-3 in the second set when Williams committed unforced errors in succession. Williams double-faulted to concede the second set.

Williams finished the match with 48 unforced errors to Jankovic's 35.

Man in Taylor case charged w/sex trafficking of a child

Man charged with sex trafficking of child

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- The man who authorities say set up former NFL star Lawrence Taylor with a 16-year-old runaway has been charged with sex trafficking of a child.

Rasheed Davis was charged in a criminal complaint filed Friday in Manhattan federal court.

The complaint referred to the 51-year-old Taylor as "Client-1." It said he told police officers in Ramapo, N.Y., that he engaged in sex acts with a woman in a hotel room Wednesday before paying her $300 in cash.

The complaint also said "Client-1" told them he took a car service from Newark, N.J., to the hotel.

Taylor was charged Thursday with third-degree rape and patronizing a prostitute. His lawyer, Arthur Aidala, has denied the charges, saying Taylor did not have sex with the girl and did not rape her.

Taylor was released on $75,000 bail.

Bomb squad investigates suspicious cooler outside hotel

BREAKING NEWS

NBC News and news services

updated 1:54 p.m. ET, Fri., May 7, 2010

NEW YORK - New York police closed off part of Times Square in Midtown Manhattan on Friday as part of an investigation into a suspicious package.

Police said the package was a cooler that was in front of the Marriott Hotel. As a result, several blocks of Seventh Avenue were closed to traffic and pedestrians.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne says police have created some distance between the cooler and are "in an abundance of caution" looking into whether the cooler was abandoned by someone. Browne said no evacuations have been ordered from buildings.

A failed bomb attack on New York's Times Square on Saturday has heightened security in America's most populous city.

WNBC's Jonathan Dienst reported that the NYPD receives 100 suspicious package reports every day. These calls are up 30 percent since the failed bombing attempt last weekend.

Prosecutors on Tuesday charged Faisal Shahzad, 30, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Pakistan, with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and trying to kill and maim people in the United States.

Shahzad is accused of driving a crude homemade bomb of gasoline, propane gas, fireworks and fertilizer into crowded Times Square on Saturday evening.

New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the Times Square plot was the 11th thwarted attack on New York City since hijacked airliners destroyed the World Trade Center's twin towers on September 11, 2001, killing more than 2,700 people.

Venus ousted; Serena into the semis

Thursday, May 6, 2010
Jankovic takes out Venus

Associated Press

ROME -- Two-time champion Jelena Jankovic rolled to a surprisingly easy 6-0, 6-1 win Thursday over Venus Williams and prevented an all-Williams semifinal at the Italian Open.

Venus struggled with her serve and never really threatened on a cool evening at the Foro Italico.

Earlier, Serena Williams overcame a rough stretch in the second set to dispatch Maria Kirilenko 6-1, 6-4.

In the other half of the draw, former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic beat 14th-seeded Nadia Petrova 6-2, 7-5 and will face 26th-ranked Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain. She defeated Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic 7-6 (6), 6-4.

Venus returned after a month on the sideline because of right knee tendinitis. She committed 11 unforced errors to Jankovic's one in the first set. She hit two costly double-faults on one occasion to hand Jankovic a 4-1 lead in the second.

Jankovic won this clay-court warmup for the French Open in 2007 and 2008. She entered with a 5-5 career record against Venus and was not expecting an easy match.

"I had so many tough matches against Venus," Jankovic said. "It's great to win -- 6-0, 6-1 is really unbelievable."

Top-ranked Serena is up next for Jankovic.

"When you play against a Williams you can't relax at all, you just have to go out there and it give it your best," the Serb said.

Serena had been out with a left knee injury since winning the Australian Open in January.

"My knee is feeling good so far," she said. "I can't believe I'm still in the tournament -- it's weird."

With her ranking down to No. 58, Ivanovic recently hired Steffi Graf's old coach, Heinz Gunthardt, to improve her game.

"We've worked a lot the last few weeks and I feel great out there," she said. "I've been working a lot on the serve and I'm getting a lot of free points. My serve has been a big issue the last year and a half and having confidence in it now puts less pressure on the other parts of my game."

Since winning the 2008 French Open, Ivanovic's only title came later that year in Linz, Austria.

"I think every player goes through tough times, but it's not how many times you fall down, it's how many times you get back up," Ivanovic said. "I'm really happy to be back on track."

After cruising through the first set and taking a 4-0 lead in the second, Serena lost three straight games before regaining control on her service games. She blasted aces at 123 mph and fired baseline winners at will.

Serena had an 8-1 edge in aces and 19-7 in winners. She attributed the brief lapse to a lack of "match toughness."

"I definitely should have been up 5-0," she said. "Hopefully, as I start playing more, I'll start to close these games out better."

Serena won this tournament in 2002 en route to her only title at Roland Garros.

Martinez Sanchez maintained her focus during a brief downpour that interrupted play for 15 minutes just after the start of the first-set tiebreak. The Spaniard also controlled the play with her big first serve, landing seven aces.

Celtics GM Ainge Fined $25K

NBA fines Ainge $25K for actions

ESPNBoston.com news services

NEW YORK -- Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge was fined $25,000 by the NBA on Thursday for tossing a towel to try to distract Cavaliers forward J.J. Hickson as he shot a free throw.

Ainge flipped a white towel over his head during the third quarter of Monday night's playoff game between Boston and Cleveland. Ainge was attempting to rattle Hickson, who made his second free throw despite the distraction.

Stu Jackson, the league's executive vice president of basketball operations, fined Ainge for "an unauthorized distraction and for conduct detrimental to the game."

Celtics coach Doc Rivers said after the team's practice in Waltham, Mass., on Thursday that he was surprised Ainge was fined.

"That's a lot of towels. Those are some Grade A towels that Danny bought, for sure," he said with a laugh. "What's the difference between that and mascots, [who] do it all the time. I was wondering if Danny had borrowed [Celtics mascot] Lucky's outfit. He could try that."

While the NBA found Ainge's actions inappropriate, LeBron James didn't think he did anything wrong.

"I think it's cool," the league's two-time MVP said after practice. "A GM or an owner like Mark Cuban and you see M.J. [Michael Jordan], those guys it's their team, they put the team together and they can have as much fun as they want to. I think it's cool. I mean, why not? I'm not opposed to it."

The Celtics were leading 80-57 at the time of Ainge's towel toss. Boston went on to win 104-86 to even the Eastern Conference semifinal at 1-1.

On Wednesday, Ainge said he regretted his behavior, calling it "unprofessional."

"I was having fun with the hecklers and the crowd that was sitting around me," Ainge said during an interview on Boston sports radio station WEEI.

"There's just no excuse. It was unprofessional. I regret doing it. The biggest reason I regret it is you guys should be talking about the great play of the Celtics and not talking about a towel incident. I'm shocked that it's become this big a deal."

Ainge said he was simply caught up in the moment and was not trying to stir up any animosity.

"The competitiveness in me gets the best of me," Ainge said on WEEI. "That's no excuse, it was unprofessional. Hopefully we can move on past this and focus on the players and the real issues at hand."

Ainge also said Wednesday he was expecting to get fined.

"Usually when things become public like this you do hear from the league," Ainge said. "I don't think David Stern cares about a towel that was thrown, but because it's become such a public story I'm sure there will be something. I'd like to give my charitable contributions to those of my own choice, but I am confident the league does well with our money."
