UK Ticket-Holder Wins Estimated £101 million EuroMillions Jackpot

EuroMillions jackpot reaches £100m

The massive haul of cash is the third largest lottery prize ever won in the UK, according to Camelot.

It is not yet known if the jackpot has been won by a single ticket-holder or a syndicate.

A National Lottery spokeswoman said: "This is amazing news, we are absolutely delighted."

The biggest-ever EuroMillions prize was a £161 million jackpot won by Colin and Chris Weir, from Largs, Scotland, earlier this year.

The National Lottery spokeswoman added: "This is the third biggest winner this country has ever seen and follows hot on the heels of the Weirs who banked an incredible £161m in July.

"We've got the champagne on ice and look forward to welcoming the ticket-holder into the National Lottery millionaires' club."

An individual winner would become £1 million richer than rock'n'roll legend David Bowie, the 703rd richest person in the country, according to The Sunday Times Rich List 2011.

They would move ahead of celebrity couples such as Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne (£95 million), and Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin (£48 million).

The winning numbers from last night's draw were 18, 26, 34, 38 and 42. The Lucky Star numbers were 8 and 5.

Nanuet New York Woman Wins $3 Million Jackpot From Scratch-Off Ticket

Yolanda Vega, right, from the New York Lottery presents a check to Seema Dhimmer, 26, on Wednesday at Corner News Deli in Nanuet. Dhimmer, a Nanuet resident, won $3 million from a scratch-off ticket. "I'll pay off my student loans first. And, for fun, I've been thinking about a new car," Dhimmer said.

NANUET — Seema Dhimmer stops by her parents' convenience store almost every day after work but her decision to visit them on Sept. 15 has made her rich.

The 26-year-old physical therapist from Nanuet won $3 million from a New York Lottery scratch-off ticket that she bought in the store.  "It's overwhelming," she said following a news conference Wednesday in front of the Corner News and Deli on Main Street.

What makes her story even more remarkable is that Dhimmer didn't even set out to buy a ticket.   A woman in front of her asked for two "Make Me Rich" tickets. Upon learning they cost $10 each, she decided to purchase only one.

Dhimmer, who plays the lottery "once in a while," said she figured she would buy the other scratch-off.  "There was no reason.  She didn't want it, so I took it," said Dhimmer, whose greatest bit of financial luck prior to winning the jackpot was finding $26 on the beach.

Dhimmer didn't immediately realize she had won. None of the numbers matched, and when she scratched off the last box, she thought she might be an automatic winner. She asked her dad, who was behind the counter, to verify the ticket, and he told her that she had won.

"If that's not the definition of random, I don't know what is," New York Lottery spokeswoman Carolyn Hapeman said, adding that there is no rule that prohibits store owners from buying tickets or selling them to family.  The woman who ended up not buying the ticket had left the store by the time Dhimmer learned she won.

Gayatri Dhimmer, who has owned the store with her husband, Pravin, for four years, said customers have won $10,000 and $21,000 in the past, but nothing like this.

"I'm happy for her, but still, I can't believe it," said Gayatri Dhimmer, who moved to Rockland from New Jersey a few years ago.

Dhimmer moved back home after she graduated from the New York Institute of Technology in Long Island.  Even though she will take home $99,045 a year after taxes for the next 20 years, she plans to keep working.

She said she hasn't splurged on anything yet but plans to pay off college loans and wants to buy a new car. She can't decide whether to get a Lexus or an Audi. And, of course, she intends to take care of her parents.  "They're very happy for me," Dhimmer said.

Supermarket Syndicate's Huge Lottery Win

Asda workers from Hyde, Greater Manchester who won £6,873,588 on the National Lottery

A group of workers at a supermarket in Greater Manchester were celebrating with champagne after their syndicate won more than £6.8m on the National Lottery.

It means the 16 members of staff at Asda in Hyde, Greater Mancheser, who mostly work on the checkouts, have a large boost to their salaries.

But as they celebrated by drinking champagne, most of the syndicate said they would stay on at the Greenfield Street store despite the win.

Syndicate leader Debra Wilson said they realised they had won Saturday's Rollover Jackpot at work on Monday morning.

She said: "There were hugs and kisses all round. It was brilliant. The managers all came down to say well done and the store manager even gave me a hug.

"It is a great place to work and I think most of us will stay on - we have such a good time and are all good friends."

Wilson formed the syndicate in January 2010, and has been making sure their numbers were in the draw twice a week since then.

She said: "We have had a few wins so far and had won about £300 this year, which is great, but this is unbelievable."

The syndicate stayed with the same numbers chosen by Lucky Dip tickets on the first ever draw they played. Debra made a card with all the lines on for each syndicate member but admitted everyone checked them.

She said: "It was Monday morning and one of the girls called and said we had won. I thought it was a wind-up and searched out the actual ticket to check them. I looked at the television and then called Camelot." News spread among the store about their win after Camelot confirmed it.

Lithonia Georgia Woman, 44, is $25M Powerball Jackpot Winner

Kathy Scruggs of Lithonia won the $25 million Powerball multi-state lottery jackpot Sept. 14.

A Lithonia woman, who has been looking for work since her seasonal job ended in the spring, is the winner of the $25 million Powerball multi-state lottery jackpot from Sept. 14.

Ironically, Kathy Scruggs, 44, didn't even mean to buy the ticket.

“I asked for a Mega Millions ticket, and the lady gave me a Powerball ticket” by mistake, she explained. “I just took it anyway.”

Scruggs matched all of the winning numbers in the Sept. 14 Powerball drawing. Those numbers were: 16-41-42-50-59 and the Powerball was 5.  She claimed her prize Monday at Georgia Lottery headquarters in Atlanta.

Scruggs discovered her good fortune the night after the drawing and woke up the entire house.

“We were screaming and hollering, and everybody came running,” she said. “I could not believe it.”

After working a seasonal job during prom time, Scruggs had been trying to find employment.

“I’ve been looking and looking and looking,” she said.

Now she plans to buy a car, travel and help her family and others.

“I’m going to build my mom and grandmother a home,” she said. “That’s my first focus.”

She also wants to start foundations to help the homeless and to provide dental assistance to those in need.  “I’m happy and grateful,” she said. “I really am.”

The Quik Pik jackpot ticket was purchased at Shell Food Mart, 4144 Memorial Drive, Decatur.
