The vanishing male and pornography

Updated:

One of the recent threads, RickG's experience in ritual combat with an Internet ghost, and the re-reading of The Songlines got me thinking about a number of matters I'm usually not prone to do much thinking about.

One of those involves the male role in humanity, how it's changed and become unrecognizable in the 21st Century, and how that diminished role might be an explanation for the literal millions of pornography sites reported to be on the Internet.

The male role in the human species from the earliest Homo-Erectus until shortly after WWII was clearly protector, provider, fighter when fighting needed doing, hunter, and builderFather and trainer of male children.

Not necessarily a role of dominance, nor of governance, as many matriarchal societies have demonstrated.  But almost universally filling those other niches mentioned.  In later times, governance and dominance became a part of it in most of the world.

Beginning in the early 20th Century men in the US became the leading edge of a phenomenon that also became world-wide by the end of the century.  They voluntarily abdicated their roles of dominance and governance.

Females would argue otherwise about the ‘voluntarily' nuance, but the 20th Century is the first time in recorded history for such an event.  Women were allowed to vote.  Women were allowed to hold jobs alongside men.  Women were allowed to assume positions of power in government.

Women didn't win these rights and privileges by force of arms.  They were presented them by the men in power throughout the society who were not forced at gunpoint to do so.

An amazing social experiment with multitudes of unforeseen consequences.

This blog entry is about the mysterious proliferation of pornography and how it might be one of those unforeseen consequences.

While the male American was handing his traditional roles over to females, he didn't assume new roles, such as mother.  He merely abdicated many of his own without any obvious replacement.  Females, meanwhile, did not diminish their own traditional roles, they expanded them.

  • So when a man goes to a 21st Century conflict it's no longer obvious he's fighting to keep the monster enemy away from the women keeping the homeplace intact.  Likely as not there are women alongside him in combat.
  • When a man goes to work as a provider he works alongside mothers who are also providing.
  • All the potential roles, save one, in the modern world are co-ed.
  • Sperm provider.

The only uniquely male role left in the modern world lies in his ability to experience a tingle in the sexual department and provide the other piece of future life.

Maybe that's the reason he's so preoccupied with it.  It's the only thing he can be certain he's better at it than most women.

Thanks for the comment Shalini.

Actually, there's one other time in recorded history when a group voluntarily, peacefully threw in the towel and abdicated political power, etc. The USSR. Nobody's figured that one out, either. Or if they have, they haven't shared it in a convincing way.

New world spinning around out there. On the Rezes in the US the kids wear their hats turned backward and listen to rap music. The men go off to prison and become gang members, come back to the Rez with loyalties more demanding than those of their traditional clans, completely antithetical to the clans.   Nights on the Rez they laugh at canned laughter on television screens.

We're a species that's forgotten where it came from and hasn't a clue where it's going.

PAC:

The last stage of evolution involves an operation frequently performed in Trinidad, Colorado. Although it's hmmmm forced evolution, it performs the final step in the 'vanishing male' road humanity's taking.

By the time you're as old as I am you'll probably be wearing lipstick. I'm glad I won't live to see it.

The issue regarding the modern male role has been discussed for years by numerous behavior analysts in books and articles. Regarding the increase in the use of pornography, I totally disagree with you. I wish I had time to explain. Maybe later. Just saw this at 4 in the morning, so I'll need to look at it again to be fair. Briefly, I feel that putting men and women on a more equal scale increases his strength and masculinity. There are many men who are content staying at home being Dads while their successful wives perform surgery or defend criminals. I think women are under much more pressure, since they are expected to get married, get pregnant, raise a family and hold a job. Most men were raised to be stronger and better than women and, because of that, they feel threatened when they see women who are better than they are at performing the same job. It's simply an attitude adjustment.

Pornography is a way to degrade women and view them as sexual objects. If that type of entertainment empowers a man, then the problem is his own sense of worth, or lack of it. But please don't blame it on women in the government or women who provide for their families by struggling up the corporate ladder. It all comes down to a personal sense of decency and self-respect. A man can be much more than "sperm provider" when he chooses to be soulmate not master, partner not rival, creator not destroyer. When "a man goes to work as a provider... alongside mothers" it means the women probably got up at 5 and cooked, changed diapers, drove the kids to school/daycare, and will have to pick them up, make them dinner and put them to bed after their baths. I read stuff like this all the time and I just want to yell "Get over it!"

"It's the only thing he can be certain he's better at it than most women." Hope that sentence refers to tuning cars and drinking beer. You can't possibly be talking about sex.
