A Liberal Post

Published:

It seems I may be the only liberal on this site, but I guess the world needs balance, no?

I'm frustrated about the election results, that we've now got four more years of Bush.  I voted on Tuesday, stood in line before work, it was great to see everyone out.

I won't rant too much on here about the Electoral College, and how it would be so tough to destroy, and how news networks would have no suspense on election night with a simple tally of votes: 1 person, 1 vote.  Or, how 200,000 Vermonters get 1 electoral vote, yet 500,000 Connecticutians (sp?) get only 1 electoral vote.

No, I'm more concerned with the state of the US and of the world.  What states voted for Kerry? States that face real, present danger in the norm of terrorism!  The states that voted for Bush are rural...I doubt Al-Qaeda's planning to blow up a cornfield in Indiana.  Look at the Democrat/Republican state split, what has changed since the 1860 election, since the Civil War???  That's amazing!

Iraq, Iraq, no need to go into detail...I do believe Saddam Hussein was a threat to world stability.  However, we threw the post 9/11 sympathy out the window by rushing into Iraq.  Build a true global coalition, not just a few English speaking countries!  Not to mention W. was just avenging daddy's 1991 failure.

Yes, the US is the world's superpower.  But things will not stay that way.  We may be the international police/bully (depending on your view) at the moment; but look at the EU - 25 countries! An economy that can only continue to gain on US economic power.  Also, China, 4 times the US population, an incredible superpower that will have arrived in 20 years.  Things will not stay the same, and I fear that countries may remember how we behaved when the US held the reins.

2nd term presidents - have got nothing to lose.  We already invaded a country against the wishes of the entire world sans the UK!  Yes, stop Hussein, but attack with the global community's support if you are not immediately threatened (i.e. no WMD).  What is to stop W. from invading Iran in a week? Syria in January? N. Korea come February?  The draft?  If God tells him to do it, well then, gotta do it...

The Christo-fascism scares me.  I am hardly an outsider to religious zealots.  I grew up as one.  It's an environment based on fear, fear of being punished, fear of hell, fear of authority.  My father was an Assemblies of God evangelical minister.  I love my family dearly, but I can't understand the Faith in Bush.  The values are great: loving your neighbor, respecting other people.  But this is a secular society!  We are not the Taliban, we are not the German Nationalist Party of the '30s, not yet.  But what about Ashcroft, the Patriot Act, locking citizens up without due recourse???

Personal, religious faith is important.  Running a country on religious doctrine is scary.

What about the environment?  Ok, maybe Kyoto was flawed...but fix it, don't walk away!! The rest of the world is moving forward, trying to prevent ecological catastrophe, shouldn't we be at the forefront?  Ok, so oil cronies need their due, fine, but at what price?  Our very existence?

The War on Terror is a brand-new war.  You cannot be successful by bombing a country anymore, or by preventing certain ethnicities/nationalities from entering the US!

This is a War of Ideas; as long as the Internet exists, the free flow of ideas, there are thousands of sleeper cells, potential terrorists in NYC, LA and across the US.  Some are just waiting for further disenfranchisement from the government to become sympathetic to terrorists.  We need to change ideas, change how people think, that can only happen from the ground up, with a new generation, new ideas, a new world.  Countries are in some part arbitrary constructs, entities that have not always existed, yet to which we hold so tightly.  It is a global world, the solutions will have to be different for this generation.  I am not anti-American, nor am I anti-troops....I'm anti-bullying the rest of the world, because if we continue this way, we will pay a large price in backlash in the future.

This War requires a new answer, a new solution.  Bombs don't work.  We've spawned many more terrorists across the Middle East than we have killed.  How can we change ideas and thinking?

Religious ideas are very similar between America and the Middle East:

Islam - Allah - one almighty God, everyone else is wrong

Christianity - Jesus - one almighty god, everyone else is wrong

Where's the tolerance? Where's the world peace?

If Bush can provide strong, effective leadership that brings the rest of the world back to our side, I will support him.  He has not done that the last four years.

I'm sitting here at work, just typing out a whole bunch of thoughts about this election.  I respect everyone else's right to their opinion, I hope you can read what I've written and empathize somewhat, as I've tried to do with others on this site.

One of the most poignant issues for me in this election is gay marriage.  I tried real hard not to cry when I was reading the results of the 11 states that voted on gay marriage.  One of the things I want most in the future is to marry the guy I love, when I find him.  It's nothing more or less than what other people want....love, happiness, fulfillment...discrimination is an evil, dirty word.

Well, thanks for reading my viewpoints.

You're not alone!
Though i'm not 'liberal', on all things, i'm in total agreement with your comments.
It's a shame, that soo many Americans think they have the luxury, of being 'stupid'.

I don't see what the big deal is with gay marriage... it would make people happy and wouldn't hurt anyone... why such opposition?
I don't recall the bible supporting sexual abuse of altar boys, but enough of that sure went on and was swept under the rug.
Gay marriage will not undermine the traditional values of the American Family... NAFTA outsourcing does that more than anything.
Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness... Bush got the first one right... I don't feel I should have to contribute tax dollars to the taking of life in the womb... but the patriot act is screwing up liberty and the pursuit of happiness is becoming a luxury of the rich.

Green Day's song "American Idiot", I can't look at the election results and not hear the lyrics.

There are 3.6 million more people who disagree with you than agree with you. I'm dancing on the ceiling that Bush won and the liberals and the mainstream media lost!

The people in "the cornfields" (as you say) know more about the history of this country, it's values, and what this democracy is about that any limosine liberals and Bush haters in New York or California. My hat is off to them!

I suppose Kenneth Lay is dancing right along with you Todd.

He can't wait to receive that presidential pardon.

What the....? George, you really came out of left field with that one. You must still be fuming that Kerry lost.

If it weren't for the lingering aura of 911, this election would have clearly gone the other way. I personally don't hope for more and worse scandals during this term, but they will happen. The Democrats shouldn't even attempt to cater to the voting blocks made up of people apposed to minority rights. The ultra right voting block that the gop mobilizes by using wedge issues isn't even a major minority of voters.

Ha! You're calling 59 million people a "voting block"? I call it America!

Personally, I hope liberals keep thinking this way, because they're going to keep losing, and their minority in the house and Senate will keep shrinking. Soon the conservatives will be filibuster-proof. I can't wait!

Massachusetts has the lowest divorce rate in the country and blue states (Wisconsin and Minnesota went blue...yay!) have lower rates of out of wedlock births than red states on average :)

Newsbreak: Wisconsin and Minnesota were already blue states. In fact, in 1984, Minnesota was the one & only blue state (for Mondale).

I noticed you didn't mention the divorce rate in California - the biggest blue state.

On a side note: http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/11/05/voting.problems.ap/index.html

My stance on computerized lotteries and elections is the same; too much room for manipulation. Much has been written (truth and conspiracy alike) about the Diebold (supplier of electronic voting machines)and Republican connection. I don't know what to think.

I call it America, Inc.

The only bright side is that it will be easier to build a fan base once the CD is recorded :-)

I hope the working class can weather the next 4 years of abuse... it's not going to be easy.

I guess the 350,000 people who got jobs last month are "weathering" things OK. Things keep getting better and better thanks to our wonderful president and his smart policies. I'm so glad he has the intestinal fortitude to stand up to the liberals and the MSM (mainstream media). His policies help everyone - including the liberals who complain about him.

the jobs created are paying almost 10,000 per year less than the ones lost... real generous of them. I wish your wonderful president could stand up to the corporations...

No, the new jobs pay much better than the old dime-a-dozen phone bank jobs that we outsourced to India.

Our wonderful president works with the corporations and citizens alike, unlike the liberals who think that corporations are enemies.

Corporations are good. Most started as small entrepreneurial start-ups in which the owners did especially well and grew them into great companies. That's the American dream, but unfortunately liberals can't get that straight.

in 4 years you will hear this comment "you were right". I'm keeping my Kerry sticker on my car. Just to hear that statement from all those religious rights people; Who lost there jobs to folks in China.

No, we won't hear that.

Jag331,

I agree 100% with all the points you made. Couldn't have said it better myself.
The biggest point I agree with and have made my points regarding this in chat rooms regarding this issue is this: The folks in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles have the most to lose, not Pine Bluff, AK or Crawford, TX where their biggest target is 3 stories tall in a downtown area of less than a aquare mile and less than 100 people in any one place at one time. Being a Chicagoan I am very concerned about our safety and was happy to see the states of IL, NY and CA voted against Bush and realize the further danger he has placed upon our major urban population centers for catastrophic attacks.
Thank you.

I love how liberals think GWB put America in danger of attacks. How sick - and funny - at the same time.

I guess all those attacks that occured under Clinton's presidency - including bombing the World Trade Center - were because Clinton put America in danger? No? Yes? (I'll give the liberals out there extra time to come up with a good response for that one.)

How sad that the president that has protected us every day since 9/11, and is spreading liberty throughout the world, is attacked.

There are some people who will resist the idea that Bush is a great president, but history will prove those people wrong.

By the way, after the final count of votes, Bush won the election 52% to 47%. One of the greatest victories ever. For a great leader.

Bottom line is that over three years later, Osama bin laden is still a free man making videos taunting the US and bragging about murdering almost 3,000 people in cold blood. I wouldn't tolerate this kind of failure from my local district attorney or police chief so why should I have to tolerate this failure of the US government to do its job? Failure to apprehend criminals and administer justice for their crimes is failure, I don't care what your politics are.

Just to clarify my last response to your blog, I was referring to crimes directed against the US of A, not some "tribes" located in the far corners of the globe who do not affect our daily lives as the bombing of the WTC towers did and the professed goal of Osama bin laden to bankrupt our country which will affect all of our lives as Americans. Let's concentrate on getting the right criminal at the right time in the right country. I think all Americans can unite behind that goal.

Look, I think it's possible for liberals and conservatives to have these same arguments all day. Both sides are firm in their convictions, and I'm sure that both sides love America.

At this point it's clear that the freedom that is being spread to both Afghanistan and Iraq is FRIGHTENING to terrorists. I'm sure we can all agree that the Islamic terrorists wouldn't be rallying in Iraq if they weren't so worried. After all, Saddam Hussein was a secular dictator, not a Muslim, so they are not trying to defend one of their own religious zealots. Instead, they recognize that the spread of freedom to Iraq and Afghanistan will not stop there, and they will have fewer and fewer spider holes in which to hide.

Instead of continuing to spread the failed liberal talking points (I'm allowed to refer to them as "failed", since Kerry did indeed lose the election by a sizable margin), why not rally around our troops and our country's approach?

You never know, you may be wrong, and when we win in Iraq, President Bush could be 100% correct. Then, you'll have been on the winning side of history, just like me!
