I got my new computer just now from HP.

Published:

I just got my new computer by FedEx.
I stll have to unpack it, I only bought the Pc, not a monitor nor printer as I have an older Pc (Very old) that has a new monitor and printer that I bought for it time ago, I will use that monitor for the new Pc until I get an even newer-one for it as I want to keep on using the older Win98SE Pc, the old Pc will be mostly for the internet and for running old Win98SE and DOS programs, the new Pc will be for WinXP and speed and memory hungry programs, I will try to see if I can also find Win98SE hardware drivers for the new Pc for sound, video and whatever else might be needed, if I find them I will set-up many partitions into the hard drive and put the Win98SE O.S. into some of them and WinXP in-to others, so I can easily run DOS, WIN98SE and WinXP program on the same Pc.
My old Pc is too old for WinXP. it will maybe run on it, but way too slowly, perhaps it would crash too much if I did.
If I can run both WinXP and Win98SE on the new Pc then the older one will be just an internet terminal for the most part and I will run most program on the new Pc.
I do need to by some extra memory for the new Pc as I only bought 256MB for it, too keep expenses down on it, I will find a source of cheaper I GB memory for it, right now it comes with 256MB DDR2-533MHZ SDRAM (1x256)
I will keep that memory and just add to it in the other slot the 1GB as soon as I find a cheaper source for it. 1.256GB should be more than enough for that Pc.
Next I would need a scanner.

Good luck with it, Fernando. I did pretty much the same thing last week. I purchased mine from tigerdirect.com. Check them out when you're looking for peripherals. Excellent service and prices.

Have fun with your new toy!

I am going to sound like an echo. Good luck and may it serve you well!
Most software is backward compatible and should run under XP (without actually installing Win 98) - but that is up to you if you want 2 operating systems.

someone told me you can use xp and get the look of win98 screens. winxp is 10 times better than win98. xp can fix most of any problems that might occur while win 98 you have to manually fix stuff.
i agree all pc's need additional memory at least 1 gig.

Thanks to everybody.
I ahve not taken the time yet to check it out, but if I can also run Win 98SE programs with it, then it will be great.
What I already don't like is that it ddin't come with a WinXP cd, so if it would happen to crash for whatever reason, I will also need to buy one of those CDs, but to keep costs down an upgrade version would perhaps be good enough as I already have a Win98 CD.
Partition Magic should be able to make more partitions and or resize the hard drive, as I want to make many WinXP partitions in it.
I would also like to download and IMAGE of the WinXP partition, just the occupied portion of it, into one of the new created partitions (I have not made any extra partitions in it yet) and then if I can burned into a CD, this would save me from having to buy a new WinXP CD in case of a crash.
Maybe tomorrow I will connect and try the new Pc.

Fernando good idea to have both OSA's, I allways make 1st partition FAT32 for Windows98SE and only after adding all software and updates from CDA's and Internet, following is booting from the WinXPSP2 CD, donA't worry if you didnA't make the partition before, WinXPSP2 asks you to make the new partition but look, youA've got two choices to make, if you want to make an default NTFS partition for Windows XP or if you want to make another FAT32 and it can work with it, i think is much better if both partition are FAT32 thats because if you are running Windows 98SE and want to get a file from windowsxp partition you can borrow it and thatA's it, instead if you have NTFS you will not see this kind of partition from Windows 98SE, another good reason is if your Windows XP Corrupts anytime, you still have Windows 98 to keep running safe, untill you fix Windows XP again, another thing is you feel that you allways work and make working files in My documents in windows XP it might be necessary to make "Windows XPA's My documents" copy to the windows 98se partition, there is a little application called mirror.com, you can place the main application whereever you need it, but a link must be placed at "startup" group and write complete sentence where you want to copy from - to, if you donA't find this application somewhere give me a message to the following address luiseherrerag@hotmail ..... (remenber when writing down your email address not to show .com because an email spammer robot might get yours) and i will give you a copy is just a little one, well sorry for this long letter all of you have a great day and winnings c u
