Man Tries to Drive 310 Miles in Reverse

SYDNEY, Australia (Oct. 6) - A 22-year-old man attempted to drive 310 miles in reverse on a remote Outback highway after his transmission failed, blocking his forward gears, police said Friday. The man was stopped by Western Australia state police on Thursday afternoon after they spotted his car roaring in reverse down the highway at about 40 mph, according to a statement.

He was en route to the state capital, Perth, when his transmission failed outside a restaurant in the Outback town of Kalgoorlie, about 300 miles away, according to media reports.

Rather than call a mechanic, the man opted to continue driving, in reverse.

Police said they stopped the man, whose identity was not immediately released, outside the nearby town of Coolgardie, about 12 miles from where his backward journey began.

A breath test for alcohol proved negative, but the man was charged with reckless driving and other traffic offenses, police said. He was ordered to appear before the Coolgardie Magistrates Court on Monday.

Funny story, Mike. I could understand this if he was in the middle of nowhere, but he was outside a restaurant when the transmission failed. No wonder they tested him for alcohol. Think about it...driving 12 miles in reverse. His neck must have been killing him.

Funny you should post this now because I just saw a man back into someone. A few days ago I was pulling into a shopping center when I saw a car driving in reverse. Then I saw & heard the crash. Everyone was okay, but the truck it hit was smashed on the side. I have no idea why he was backing up and figure he was at Albertson's or Target and forgot something. There was a gas station there as well, so maybe he decided to get gas or buy a lottery ticket as he was leaving. The woman he hit was lucky she was driving a fairly large pickup truck. He could have pulled out on the road and turned around. My father, who is 92 yrs old, is one of those people who will pass an exit sign on the interstate and back up which is why I refuse to get into his car and follow him whenever I visit.
