Blocked But Not Silenced!

This is in response to a post that says Gerry Studds had to sneak his 17 year old companion to the Middle East to have sex.

I want to make it very clear that I do not accept bad behavior, but there is a huge difference between being a homosexual and a pedophile. There is also a difference between having a consensual relationship and being solicited or raped. There are 3 people whom the Republicans keep targeting in defense of Mark Foley, a sexual predator. They are Gerry Studds, Bill Clinton and Barney Frank.

First, before someone preaches the Law, he/she should know what it says! The age of consent is 16 years of age in Washington DC. and in many states. There actually isn't an “age of consent” when it comes to a male/male relationship in most states, but every state has a different statutory rape law. Gerry Studds was a homosexual and did not hide it. Although his actions certainly are questionable and he is guilty of bad judgment, he was not a sexual predator or rapist. In fact, following allegations by Republicans in 1983, all the claims against him proved to be 100% false and it took a lengthy investigation to discover that he had an affair 10 years earlier in 1973 with a 17 year old page. Again, I am not condoning his relationship with a page, but that 17 year old was considered to be an adult at the time and was also a gay male who consented. Apparently the people who go to the polls to vote must have examined the evidence and did not condemn Mr. Studds, because he continued to serve for another decade. I doubt if anyone, even the most liberal minded, would vote for a child molester or a sexual predator.

So now we get to Mr. Clinton. Please correct me if I am wrong, but he was guilty of cheating on his wife and having an affair with another adult. Bill Clinton also was wrong and, as I said before, bad behavior should never be condoned, but he is not a sexual predator or a rapist. Yes, Bill Clinton lied to us, but what other country would be investigating or trying to impeach a leader for having oral sex? Monica was far from an innocent victim.

I won't even defend Barney Frank here, because he wasn't guilty of anything except bad judgment since the man he had sex with was 28 years old. He also was not a page or even worked for the government, so Congressman Frank wasn't taking advantage of a subordinate. Again, the people continue to support and elect him, so unless the people of Massachusetts are all blind to criminal behavior and sexual deviants, Mr. Frank is not a pervert and didn't break the law.

So now we come back to Mark Foley, who campaigned diligently against the very crime he committed. He stood in front of the his constituents and said “We must protect our children” while he was sending disgusting messages to a 16 year old boy. In 1998 Mark Foley, in response to Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky said:

"It's vile," said Rep. Mark Foley, R-West Palm Beach. "It's more sad than anything else, to see someone with such potential throw it all down the drain because of a sexual addiction."

I copied this from the St. Petersburg Times.  Words like "hypocrisy" don't begin to describe his remark.

Mark Foley is a sexual predator. He is NOT just guilty of bad judgment or having an affair with a subordinate. (neither of which I approve)  However, it is apparent that some Republicans feel that, by attacking the Democrats, Mark Foley's actions will not put a dark cloud over their party during the upcoming election.  Don't worry guys, it was already raining pretty hard. He just added some bad wind and it really stinks!

You know what's frustrating? This has happened to me twice tonight. I've been in the middle of a lengthy response to a blog and been interrupted by a PM. When I hit cancel to respond to the blog later, I'm returned to the main blog page, not the response I've just spent 10 minutes composing.

I'm not going to write it all over again.

Good post, Nancy. I agree with you 100% and dead men aren't going to change the fact that a 52 year old congressman was IM'ing pages and asking them if they were wearing boxers. Homosexual behavior with underage men seems to be more appropriate than consensual heterosexual sex nowadays.

Anyone have the new morals rulebook? Mine must be outdated.

Thanks, Emily. I haven't heard about that yet. However, he's been very open about his homosexuality for a long time. I don't want to point any fingers unless it's discovered he did something inappropriate. I know a lot of people look at homosexuality itself as immoral, but most gay men are not pedophiles.

On another note, I don't want to be controversial, but I hate the word "Gay." I remember every word from West Side Story and I used to sing all the time "I feel pretty and witty and gay! And I pity any girl who isn't me today." Now the words have been changed to "pretty and witty and bright. And I pity any girl who isn't me tonight." So somebody tell me puhleeeze!! Why should a classic musical be edited? I'm really glad they didn't use the word "Happy" because then there would only be 6 Dwarfs!

Rick, I think LP went down for maintenance at 10:01. I'm surprised my comment was posted. Lately I've been writing them on notepad and then copying my words into the comment box. Sorry you lost your comment, because I would have been interested in what you had to say, but I know how it's tough to start again. Sometimes when that happens I blank out and can't get into a writing groove again. Thanks for your comment. I hope my previous comment isn't offensive to any members, but I'm getting sick of making sure I'm politically correct all the time.

As far as Clinton goes, all the prez get their freak by getting a Lewinsky. It's like that with men in power. They just don't get caught or a witch hunt didn't exposed them. It's usually a witch hunt that get them caught or someone need a fall guy. All freaky out of control government officials with power are doing it.

Our founding fathers got it on with slaves and they were men in very high places. It hasn't changed. I wouldn't be surprised if Bush and Condie weren't gettin it on, but I won't understand why anybody would want to do her or him.

Since I am blocked from Konane's blog I need to answer Todd, whether or not he reads this. How can you possibly put Gerry Studds in the same category as Adolph Hitler? Gerry Studds was gay. PERIOD. He didn't plan the extermination and genocide of an entire group of people or teach hate, start a war, do experiments on children or throw them into ovens. I'm from Massachusetts. (When I was at U of Mass in Boston, Barney Frank lived in the upstairs apartment I rented on Marlborough St. Just a coincidence. I didn't know him.) In 1983 Studds admitted to having a relationship with a 17 year old page in 1973, 10 years earlier. He even had a televised press conference with the former page who said it was consensual and none of their business. To the best of my knowledge, no laws were broken. Now, as stated above, I am not excusing this, but he was in his 30s at the time of the relationship in 1973 and was re-elected to Congress until he retired in 1996 at 59. However, why in the world did you compare him with Hitler? He fought for Human Rights. Remember, the PEOPLE kept voting for this man. Do you think he was one of those BAD Americans (your label) because he opposed the Viet Nam war? I have no idea what kind of garbage you are throwing out just to defend Konane's insensitive, inappropriate slander. Mark Foley has definitely committed a crime and should be in jail. He solicited young pages on the internet and some of the instant messages he sent were disgusting. He asked one 16 year old if he made him horny! Hitler was definitely a pervert, but his perversion was that he had no regard for human life or decency. I guess the only way the extreme radical Right can save itself is to re-write history.
