People should feel complete before they meet someone. They are not half of a person. They need to have the confidence and like themselves before they can have a successful relationship with anyone.

There is a wonderful science fiction movie called "Enemy Mine" with Lou Gossett Jr & Dennis Quaid.
Lou Gossett Jr is a Drak (from another planet) who explains that humans have the need for 2 separate sexes because they do not feel whole when one is without the other.

If the opposite sex was not around for the other person which happens all the time. You have to be able to help yourself and rely on yourself. Many women and men feel complete without a relationship and are quite happy. !

Hmmmmmm.... I'm not so sure that simple arithmetic is a very sound tool for analiyzing relationships. Even in a dysfunctional relationship, two people don't become one person; they become one couple. And a couple is more than just two people. The gestalt principle demonstrates that the relationship dynamic creates an entity which is greater and more complex than the simple sum of two people added together or divided. A relationship is two people, their interdependence, their interconnection, their interexistence, their interaction, their interrelatedness, and a host of other shared facets.
I think we should all be able to feel secure and comfortable in being alone, but I don't think anyone really wants to get too used to the feeling of loneliness. That runs quite counter to our basic human nature as social creatures.

True, Aye. I know I'm too much of a hermit and have so many problems I just decided not to have a relationship years ago. After a while, it seems to be a natural way of life, although it really isn't. For me, I think a dog would be the best choice. You walk it, feed it, pet it and you get unconditional love.

I think saying "In any relationship in which two people become one, the end result is two half people" is really just what you wrote. That is, it's not necessary to give up your individuality to become close to another person. I always like to think of music when analyzing human behavior. If an instrument is well tuned, it will sound great by itself. But another instrument can join in and harmonize to make beautiful music together. Then the 2 might want to add a few more to make a quartet or even a whole orchestra. (children, grandchildren....) Yet alone each violin, each flute, each harp, has its own unique sound.
