I used to have a coach back in h.s. who had several rules, the breaking of which would be grounds for 25 pushups; one was sitting on your helmet, the other was saying "Huh?" or "Yeah." (instead of "Excuse me?" or "Yessir") and the third was crossing your arms. He said it was a sign of defiance. I could understand the first two, but the last was silly and I told him so after I got out of school. Yes, it could mean defiance, that you're not willing to listen to the other side of an argument, but it's also a defensive posture, sometimes meaning you're insecure. Sometimes I think people read a little TOO much into someone's body language.

Yes your dual interpretation of crossed arms is what I've seen so it depends on the individual and the context of the situation. Agree that people sometimes read too much into things.
