Starvation is part of what the universe is about, but so is my desire to change it.

Are you talking about spiritual starvation? I went to a church last night and the songs were very upbeat. I needed something to pick me up and take me out of this crazy world for just an hour. During the service they mentioned the people who don't have enough to eat for Christmas. I can't imagine not having food on the table. Many times I've made spaghetti for a week or turned a dozen eggs into 6 egg salad sandwiches. I've even had oatmeal for dinner. But to think that people have nothing at all, even in this great land of ours, is something that is so difficult to imagine. Now when I put food into my mouth I also try to feed my hunger for wisdom and knowledge and say thank you.

nancy - 35% of Americans have to choose beteween paying their rent or buying food. 10.5 million U.S. households are food "insecure." Worldwide 830 million people go hungry.

Imagine what the money used for this war could do to feed people.

I agree. The Mercury News reported today that "The total cost for the war on terror, including the conflict in Afghanistan, will be well over $500 billion and surpass the cost of Vietnam, adjusted for inflation." Think of all the affordable housing that could be built too.

What about the cost of the 700 miles fence which is now estimated to be over $7 billion? The original $1.2B estimate will barely cover the lighting. My old calculator doesn't have that many zeros, but I think that's $10M a mile. Think if even an entire town bought food using $10 million it would help a lot of people. This is a very good article about the border fence proposed that I read this week (although I don't agree with everything)
