Speedy, I am the son of a sharecropper farmer, who farmed, 100 acres. He grew mainly cotton, 60 acres and the rest was watermelons. cantaloupes, animal food and a big garden. I graduated from high school in 1959, 17. We went to D.C. and New York city on our class trip. I left with $150 and only spent $70, mainly @ Yankee stadium. I was die hard Dodger fan, but they moved to LA before I graduated. When we came home I told my dad, I still have $80 left, do you need it? His response was that is yours. My brother worked at a JP Stevens, cloth plant, told me to apply for a job. He also told me to not leave the personnel office until I had spoken with the personnel manager. When I arrived their the next morning, sat in the waiting room until the receptionist ask why was I there. I explained I was seeking employment, she gave me some paperwork to fill out and some tests to take. After finishing the paper work, she informed me it would take quite a while until Mr. Thomas was available and for me to come back after lunch. I told her, I would wait. About 1 pm, she came and introduce me to Mr. Thomas. He was holding my paper work and asked what experiences did I have? I told him, just farming. He replied, your test scores are impressive and indicates your ability to learn. He also said, I know your brother Paul, has been with us for 5 years. Then he surprised me, told me he had a supervisor coming over and for me to wait in the reception room. After 15 minutes, another man came and told me to come with him. After touring his work area and introduction to the workers. He informed them I was a new hire and would be starting tomorrow morning, which was a Tuesday. He then introduced me to my trainer. On the way back to the personnel , he asked, if I thought I would like be a Cloth Inspector and how I would be paid. He explained I would be paid on production. I asked. what is that? He smiled and told me , you are paid by the type of cloth you inspect. Some cloth less and some cloth more. Pay day was every Friday.
