My favorite James Brown Christmas Song

Published:

Updated:

I just thought about this Christmas song that James Brown did years ago. I haven't heard it yet this year. I'll be listening for it.

Santa Claus, Go Straight to the Ghetto

Santa Claus, go straight to the ghetto
Pitch up your reindeer. Uh!
Go straight to the ghetto
Santa Claus, go straight to the ghetto

And every stockings you buy,
The kids are gonna love you. So, Uh!

Leave a toy for Johnny
Leave a dog for Mary
Leave something pretty for Donnie
And don't forget about Gary

Santa Claus, go straight to the ghetto
Santa Claus, go straight to the ghetto
Tell him James Brown sent you. Ha!
Go straight to the ghetto.

You know that I know that you will see
Cause' that was once. Me.

Hit it! Hit it!
You see mothers and soul brothers

Santa Claus, go straight to the ghetto
Santa Claus, oh lord, go straight to the ghetto
And every stockings you buy,
The kids are gonna love you

So, pick up a stocking you find
You'll know they need you
So, I'm begging you Santa Claus,
Go straight to the ghetto

If anyone wanna know,
Tell him James Brown told you

So, Santa Claus, go straight to the ghetto
Never thought I realized, I'll be singing a song
With one of you. My!
Santa Claus, go straight to the ghetto.

Don't leave nothing for me
I have you
Can't you see?
Santa Claus, go straight to the ghetto
Santa Claus, the soul brothers need you

So, Santa Claus, tell him James Brown sent you...

I thought I knew every James Brown song, but I don't remember this one. Thank you. Know of anywhere online I can listen to it?

You just reminded me of a story. In 1992 I was vacationing on Tortolla and sitting alone in a deserted restaurant. It was May, the off-season. It's called that for a good reason, I guess, since it was raining every day and the mosquitos were out of control. Anyway, when I sat down to order, the waiter asked "do you want a spray of Off?" That's something I'll always remember. I had a few tails (hey, it was a vacation!) and began to get into the music playing, rocking in my seat. I asked the waiter to turn it up a bit, since nobody else was dining. James Brown was singing "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" and I really started to get "into the groove" as they say. Then the waiter said "I've heard of him. My grandmother used to listen to his music." Put me in my place pretty fast! LOL

Not that it matters, but now that recall it was May 1993. ;-)

Oy! Sorry about all these comments on your blog. I just noticed a typo. It says "I had a few tails" and somehow the word tail was cut in half!

justx, Your comments are always welcome. I'm sure the record that this song was on is out of production, but you might be able to find it used on Amazon.com or in a used record shop. You might even be able to listen to it somewhere on the 'net if you search around. I'm sure you'd enjoy it. Good luck.

I did it again! I am sober too!! LOL Maybe I should give up. I originally meant to write "I had a few tails. Maybe it isn't my typing at all. It's LP!! It won't like me write the word tail. Let's see.

So now we know - after all this apologizing for typos, I now realize that when you get a vodka tonic or whatever and write about it here, you need to write "mixed drink" or it will come out as "tail" since the c*** won't show.

Good choice aye. I always liked the brass section and the bass. Oh yes, and that head bobin and I mean bobin rhythm.

I didn't realize he passed away today. I was on the road so long yesterday that I haven't really paid much attention to anything on the news. LP was the first place I went to when I got home. Good thing I visited my father on Sunday. We've been having heavy rain all day, and driving in the rain bothers me. Actually, driving anywhere in Florida bothers me!
