I have done some restoration work on old house parts when it was not a major project that needed sending out or total duplication . Cut out the rot section use screening and bondo duplicating the profile of the bad section. One time I had a major filling to do that was not structural I filled the cavity to almost full with that canned Styrofoam, let it set, cut it back from the face if necessary and then used the wire screening and bondo smoothing it off to the profile.
