Perhaps the single most outstanding characteristic of healthy people is their unhostile sense of humor.

Yes, it's quite an art to conceptualize humor that does not exist at the expense of someone's dignity. Perhaps the most precious aspect of a healthy sense of humor is that part which allows us to laugh at ourselves. That's certainly better than beating up on ourselves and carrying around a lot of useless baggage.

I guess I first misunderstood this, since one of my gifts has always been my sense of humor and I've had just about everything but the plague since childhood. Humor is very healing. Many abused or shy children develop a good sense of humor that covers up the pain. My happiest moments with my folks were when we sat down to watch shows like the Honeymooners, Dick Van Dyke or Car 54 on our little black & white TV. Remember your Show of Shows? Brilliant! Nobody needed to use criticism or vulgarity because they had pure comic genius, like Sid Caesar & Carl Reiner.

A couple of weeks ago, following a meeting, a man was making remarks about me that were very critical (the dumb blonde kind) and he was very animated. From what I understand, the entire team was laughing while he performed. I didn't see or hear this, but a friend called me and told me what was going on. I wish she hadn't, to tell you the truth. Anyway, I see no point in getting attention by knocking others. It only proves we have run out of sources and need to dig into the gutter to get our "material." In that case, it's best to just shut up.

Aye, I agree. Laughing at ourselves is very healthy and it's also therapeutic..as long as we aren't knocking ourselves to be accepted.
