Along with love, compassion is the face of altruism.  It is a feeling from deep in the heart that you cannot bear others' sufferings without acting to relieve it.

I often discuss this with people, since there are so many capable healers who won't do anything without compensation. Anyone who has needed immediate help and has been turned away because of finances understands this. So where do you draw the line? There are many people suffering, so should a doctor help those who cannot pay? (I would answer "yes" but perhaps that's not a realistic expectation) Altruistic people also do not expect anything in return, which can include a simple thank you. I believe that when people give without any expectation of reward is when it really counts. I'm probably too selfish and appreciate a little recognition, although my most special & private moments is when I've done something nice and kept it to myself.

Psychiatrist: I charge $200 a visit for 50 minutes.
Patient: Yes, your secretary explained that to me.
Psychiatrist: So, tell me what's been bothering you lately.
Patient: I've been depressed. In fact, last night I thought about suicide.
Psychiatrist: Oh, in that case please pay in advance from now on.
