Not quite true; they haven't been so reticent when it comes to Republican nominees. They opposed Reagan's nominee Bork, Alito from G.W. Bush, Nixon on Rehnquist (although backing off when Reagan later appointed him Chief Justice) and while the natl. org. didn't oppose Clarence Thomas, the S. California chapter did.

"We oppose him (Kavanaugh) in light of the credible allegations of sexual assault against him," ACLU President Susan Herman said in the statement. By giving credence to those baseless allegations, the ACLU has proved THEY have no credibility. Not sure about anyone else, but I'd think "civil liberties" would include an innocent until proven guilty presumption from the start.
