This latest Romaine contamination might be a "Tylenol moment" for that particular veggie in the produce industry. I can understand how processed lettuce (cut and bagged) can be contaminated at the processing facility and the source found, but just why it's happening with whole plants is a mystery. After reading about it, it can be from birds flying overhead (and not sure how they can stop THAT!), tainted irrigation water (I've read stories about dead animals being dumped into the ditches) or improper sanitation on the part of the workers in the fields.

One of the reasons I would love to win the lottery is to have my own (secure and isolated) place and grow my own vegetables. I've tried doing it, but as soon as I'm gone, the neighbors strip the plants or the neighborhood juvenile delinquents destroy them.   This used to be a great neighborhood until the illegals started moving in.

Thanks Mike. As I was relishing a romaine salad night before last my son informs me about the recall. If I'm absent a few days or more you know what got me. I've always washed romaine and other lettuce in a thin solution of palmolive green dish detergent then rinsed copiously before making it into a salad. Unless there is systemic contamination that seems to remove most surface insecticide along with field dirt. I wonder if contamination is by accident or design to contaminate food supply? Dead animals dumped in the ditches or other could cause systemic contamination.

Thanks Jarasan. Really! I hope they get to the bottom of the issue soon.
