My gut feeling based on information anyone can access on the internet coupled with the legacy media reaction to the Kashoggi murder was that optics were arranged to drive a wedge between Pres Trump and Prince Mohammad bin Salman by blaming MbS for ordering that murder. Well looks like Pres Trump saw right through it.
