Has Anyone Heard Of This Tradition

Hi Everyone!

Today was my Birthday and my family and a friend took me out for lunch  to a Mexican Resturant.  My daughter  told them that it was my birthday and after we ate,,,,,,well....you guessed it,,,,,,here they came....complete with pink sombrero that they stuck on my head,,,,lol,,,,,and singing loudly and clapping...I was dieing,,,,(I am a very quiet person).

Anyway,,,,,The men were behind me singing and clapping and all of a sudden here comes a large hand completely filled with whipped cream and he smeared it across my face !!!!!!!!!!!

My family sat there with their mouths open,,,,,it was a shock,,,but my friend said that it was a tradition here,,,,,,and that it happened to her on her birthday but it was much worse.  It was even in her hair 

I have NEVER heard of this,,,,has anyone else heard of this?  Just wondering.....

we have celebrated birthdays at Frontera - they come out and sing - but no whipped cream.

When I lived in Boston I was with a group on people and it happened to one of the men. He had just gotten engaged. He was pretty upset since he was wearing an expensive suit and contact lenses. Although it sounds like a lot of fun, I think restaurants that do that are setting themselves up for a lawsuit. I can always take a good joke, but I just remember how much we had to calm him down when a waitress put a cream pie in his face.

I hope you had a wonderful time. I have a lot of Mexican neighbors and I've been in many Mexican restaurants (I'll bet half this town is now from Mexico) and I've never seen this done at any restaurant or family gathering. When I was in Mexico many years ago the waiter brought out a large sombrero and I danced around it while shooting down shots of tequila, but I don't think that's what you're talking about! LOL

I searched around on the 'net. Evidently this is something that they do at the Old Mexico chain of restaurants, but I don't think it's a Mexican tradition.

I don't remember any such thing and I am or was from Mexico, maybe I just forgot about it.
A cake and the birthday song should be enough.
