Mysterious Drug-Resistant Germ Deemed An "Urgent Threat" Is Quietly Sweeping The Globe

"The infection - a fungus known as Candida auris,  kills almost half of all patients who contract it within 90 days, according to the CDC - as it's impervious to most major antifungal medications. First described in 2009 after a 70-year-old Japanese woman showed up at a Tokyo hospital with C. auris in her ear canal, the aggressive yeast infection has spread across Asia and Europe - arriving in the US by 2016.

The earliest known case in the United States involved a woman who arrived at a New York hospital on May 6, 2013, seeking care for respiratory failure. She was 61 and from the United Arab Emirates, and she died a week later, after testing positive for the fungus. At the time, the hospital hadn’t thought much of it, but three years later, it sent the case to the C.D.C. after reading the agency’s June 2016 advisory. -NYT

"It is a creature from the black lagoon," said the CDC's Dr. Tom Chiller, who heads the fungal branch. "It bubbled up and now it is everywhere.

Perhaps a consented, concentrated, collaborative international medical think tank could be collected with the goal of investigating cause & effect??

Never forgot a science teacher I had as a youngster, she was adamant "there are no such things as germs!!".

I would say: "there is a fungus among us! And her name is, candida we could make it together, the further from here girl the better..... " Tony Orlando and Dawn, that song was huge!!!!

Keep the immune system healthy.

did some research, antibiotics can destroy good bacteria, thus promoting a great place for yeast/fungus to grow. Avoid sugar, breads, red meat, as they promote bad gut bacteria.
Good diet, water, lemons , as help.
some medications may promote yeast such as Advair.
some steroids can screw with your immune system, so get to know all side effects of your meds.

Thanks Sully. Those are all really good tips. In addition to washing hands when you come home from a public place it's a good idea to wash your face to remove anything which might enter through eyes, nose, mouth.

I've read that water treatment systems can remove nearly all pollutants, but they cannot handle antibiotics that are flushed out of the human body "by natural means" and the medicines are entering our water that way and have had a hand in creating antibiotic-resistant bacteria and viruses.   What's even more alarming than that is the same thing is true of birth control hormones.

I had forgotten that song by Tony Orlando and Dawn; I always think of "Knock Three Times" when I think of them and of course "Tie a Yellow Ribbon ('Round the Old Oak Tree) had a resurgence after the Iranian hostage crisis in 1981 and then again after the first Gulf War when the troops came home.

Too many immigrants from "a*****e Countries". Put quotas on all those countries.

Thanks Mike. I was not aware of the antibiotic resistance caused via water systems. Maybe the birth control hormones are potentially responsible for maladies they're not telling us about.

Thanks CARBOB. We need a congress which will actually enact immigration laws which benefit citizens.

Replace your home air filters regularly. If you have AC in your car replace the AC air filter regularly.

Thanks JAP. Great suggestions both. I would never have thought of car AC filters.

Come to think of it there is probably an air filter for all the air circulation for the interior of the car. Fresh air, Heat as well as AC.

Thanks JAP. I think the newer ones have it readily accessible. Unsure about older models.
