A more interesting article was this one in the sidebar: Pete Buttigieg’s National Service Plan Is a Really Bad Idea Whose Time Might Have Come. I'm surprised they didn't mention the first person who, as far as I know, initially came up with a similar plan - Robert Heinlein, in his fantastic book (made into a disappointing movie) Starship Troopers. The idea of letting only those people who serve a term of service become full citizens and have the ability to vote and serve in office appealed to me, that 12 yr. old boy back then. IOW, only those with "some skin in the game" should have any say-so. It was the seminal moment for me, shaping the way I viewed govt. and politics since that time.
